Schönbrunn Zoo recently had a special offspring: On November 18, a two-toed sloth was born. This is the 14th offspring for the pair of sloths that can be found in the aviary. "We are very happy about this offspring. Sloths are among the most fascinating and at the same time most comfortable animals that delight our visitors," explains zoo director Dr. Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck. The sloth mother looks after her young one lovingly, which is nursed for around six months. But milk is not the only thing on the menu: the young animal is already nibbling on vegetables such as celery or lettuce from time to time. Initially well hidden in the mother's soft belly fur, the offspring are now so big that they can be easily observed with the necessary patience.

In the birdhouse of Schönbrunn Zoo, sloths are undoubtedly the big favorites among the audience. Those who visit them tomorrow, on the occasion of Sloth Day, will experience a small furry surprise. "For the 13th time, we have had offspring among our sloths. A young one was born on August 20th. Initially, it was hidden in the protective fur of the mother, but by now, you can observe the little one well," announces Simone Haderthauer, zoological department head, with joy. The young one lies on its mother like in a hammock. It will only start hanging independently on branches at about six months old.

Please join us in welcoming the newest addition to Denver Zoo’s animal family—a highly-anticipated sloth baby! After months of patiently waiting, officials are delighted to share that their Linne’s two-toed sloth baby finally made its debut on Thursday, January 26 to parents Charlotte and Elliot. This healthy birth is a conservation win for the slow-moving species, and Denver Zoo gives a huge shoutout to their Tropical Discovery animal care and veterinary medicine teams who provided specialized care throughout Charlotte’s pregnancy to ensure both mom and baby were thriving. A recent neonate exam confirmed that Charlotte and her adorable new baby continue to thrive in their Tropical Discovery home and that this little one is strong, healthy, and nursing like a pro. Charlotte does have access to the public-facing part of her treetop habitat, so you may be able to catch a glimpse of mama and her tiny bundle during your next visit the Zoo! While sloth babies usually cling to their mothers for six months and may continue nursing up to a year, you can take a look at this cutie in the Zoo’s latest Baby Bulletin, presented by SCL Health, now Intermountain Healthcare. Stay tuned for more updates, including how you can take part in naming Denver’s newest resident!

London Zoo has shared adorable pictures and footage of its first 2023 arrival – a baby two-toed sloth, born on New Year’s Day.

The sloth infant born in April at Amersfoort Zoo is a male. The tenth baby for mother Amaka and father Quasimodo makes them the most successful sloth couple in Europe. “With sloths it is very difficult to tell whether it is a male or female. DNA testing provides the answer," says animal caretaker Christel Broekman. “We named the youngster Diego. We think the Spanish name is very appropriate for the sloth that occurs in the wild in Latin America.”

Indiana’s Potawatomi Zoo is so excited to announce the birth of a Linne's two-toed sloth baby at the Zoo! It was born on May 9 to mother Lily and father Lola. They don't know if it's a boy or a girl yet, but it seems healthy!

The baby is living in the Learning Center with its parents. Sloths are naturally nocturnal and arboreal (live in trees), so the baby might be sleeping or tricky to spot. It's the first sloth that's been born at the Zoo that we know of, and we're really looking forward to watching this cute little one grow up!

A sloth was born in DierenPark Amersfoort. "It is already the tenth time that mother Amaka carries a baby on her stomach", animal caretaker Christel Broekman says. The Amersfoort sloths Amaka and Quasimodo thus remain the most successful sloth couple in Europe: the couple has given birth to the most young in recent years. Christel: “It is very special that the sloths have been caring for offspring for so long.”
