Dallas Zoo is thrilled to announce their African elephant, Mlilo, gave birth to a healthy, 290-pound baby boy on Sunday, February 26. Mom and baby are both healthy and doing so well!
The little one will not be on habitat yet for several weeks, so keep an eye on Dallas Zoo's social media channels for updates on the baby in the short term. And keep an eye out for an announcement next week with the baby's name!
Brownsville, Texas (March 9, 2023) – Staff at the Gladys Porter Zoo are overjoyed to announce that Amber, a 2-year-old capybara, gave birth to three healthy pups on Tuesday, February 7th. In addition to Amber being a first-time mom, this is also the first capy birth for the staff at the Gladys Porter Zoo.
The Zoo last had capybaras in the early 1970s, however, they never reproduced. “It has been many years since we have had capybaras in our collection,” said Walter DuPree, the Zoo’s Curator of Mammals. “Then, in 2017, we placed an elderly pair of capybara on exhibit. They were very popular with our visitors, but too old to reproduce. What a treat for all of us to have a family of five on exhibit now!”
Play is a fundamental component of social learning in primates.
Among other things, it allows the development of motor, neurological and cognitive abilities. It also promotes the acquisition of certain behaviors.

More than 70 seadragons are thriving behind the scenes.
La Jolla, CA (March 3, 2023) — Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is celebrating the arrival of more than 70 tiny newborn Weedy Seadragons, which are incredibly difficult to breed and rear in captivity.
Only a handful of facilities have successfully hatched and reared this unique species of fish that are related to seahorses and pipefish.
They weigh only around 10 grams and are the size of a ping pong ball! In the desert house in front of the gates of Zoo Vienna, there are offspring among the short-eared elephant shrews. The twins were discovered on the first weekend in February. However, the mother had kept them hidden in the nests in the thickets of plants for a few days. According to animal keeper Kristina Stanschitz, anyone who wants to see the tiny creatures should hurry up. “Adolescence in elephant shrews goes by very quickly. The young animals are suckled, but also eat solid food such as insects, grains and fruit almost from the start. At the age of four weeks they are already as big as their parents. In two to three weeks they will become sexually mature and move to a backstage facility.”
Fort Worth Zoo celebrates another male Asian elephant birth
FORT WORTH, Texas – Fort Worth Zoo officials are thrilled to share the news of the birth of a healthy, 37-inch-tall, 270-pound male Asian elephant calf. The newest bundle of joy was born at 2 a.m. on Feb. 23, 2023. This is the fifth calf born at the Fort Worth Zoo, following the arrival of half-brother Brazos born in 2021, Belle, his mother, in 2013, Bowie in 2013 (Bowie now resides at the Oklahoma City Zoo), and aunt, Bluebonnet, in 1998. This newest calf adds to the three generations of elephants that call the Zoo home, which mimics how herds are established in the wild.

Dublin Zoo is delighted to announce the birth of a Southern white rhinoceros calf. The female calf, born on January 2nd to mother Nyala, is estimated to weigh approximately 50kg.
The calf joins her father, Chaka, and half-brother, Fionn, as the newest member of the seven-strong herd, also known as a crash, in Dublin Zoo’s African Savanna.
The yet-to-be-named youngster is Nyala’s second calf and the birth marks another significant success for Dublin Zoo as part of the European Endangered Species Programme, established to assist with the survival of the Southern white rhinoceros.
Philadelphia Zoo is thrilled to announce the birth of two threatened sloth bear cubs. The cubs were born January 2, 2023, at 3:53am and 4:16am to 10-year-old mom Kayla and 10-year-old dad Bhalu. This is the second successful birth of this species at the Zoo in the last four years, and marks the first successful pair of cubs of this species born in more than 30 years at the Zoo. Mom and cubs are doing well and the Zoo's animal team continues to monitor their health via camera in their behind-the-scenes den. Kayla is showing great maternal behavior and has been in constant physical contact with the infants since birth. The sex of the cubs has not yet been determined and names have not been chosen. They will NOT be visible to the public until April when mom decides it is time for them to venture out.
