Cotswold Wildlife Park has welcomed a rather significant addition to the Chapman’s Zebra family just in time for Christmas. The birth marks a milestone in the Park’s history as not only is the newborn the tenth breeding success for parents Stella and Spongebob, but she is also the fiftieth Chapman’s Zebra to be born at Cotswold Wildlife Park. It is the only zoological collection in the UK to successfully breed this iconic African species this year. The adorable foal has been named Flora by her keepers.
The Wilds is celebrating the birth of a second greater one-horned rhinoceros calf in just two months, marking another success in the conservation center’s ongoing commitment to wildlife preservation.
TORONTO, ON, Friday December 29, 2023: Sometimes the best gifts come following the holiday season! In the case of Toronto Zoo, they were delivered an extra special one: a white rhino calf!
At 7:58 am yesterday morning, Thursday, December 28th, Toronto Zoo was thrilled to welcome white rhino Sabi’s first calf to their Zoo family! While every rhino pregnancy is exciting, Sabi’s was especially so. Following her arrival in Toronto in 2012, hormone monitoring performed by Reproductive Science team identified that Sabi exhibited "long" estrus cycles (~70 days in length, compared to the typical ~30 days of fertile females), which have made conception a significant challenge for her. Following continual adjustments in daily care and diet, Sabi’s behaviour in spring 2022 suggested that her hormonal cycles had switched from the long cycles to the typical cycle length. The likelihood of successfully conceiving for the first time drops with age in many species, including white rhinos, and Zoo staff were keenly aware of this with Sabi. Your Toronto Zoo Wildlife Care and Reproductive Science teams were thrilled that the breeding introductions with white rhino male Tom in summer 2022 were successful. This is the second calf sired by the 15-year-old rhino. His first calf, Theo, was born December 24, 2017, and left Toronto in late 2021.
Jabari, the baby elephant born September 4th at Indianapolis Zoo, went swimming for the first time! He took baby steps going in and made sure he stayed close to mom until he was comfortable. Zahara, a very attentive mother, kept a very close eye on him once he started getting a little adventurous in the water. We think it's safe to say, Jabari is a big fan of the water.
Hilvarenbeek, December 7, 2023 – Less than a month after the birth of the first African elephant calf, a second calf was born at Safari Park Beekse Bergen. The healthy female named Ajabu was born on Sunday evening around 11:15 p.m.
Nashville Zoo continues celebrating the conservation milestone of the birth of three critically endangered Sumatran tiger cubs. The cubs were born October 20, 2023, and they are now ready to be named. The public is invited to help vote for their favorite names from the choices below. Each vote comes with a financial commitment of the voter's choosing and every dollar raised will go to the Tiger Conservation Campaign, an organization helping to save native habitats, curb poaching, eliminate the trade of tiger parts and reduce human/tiger conflicts.
December 6, 2023 – County Executive Adam Bello and the Seneca Park Zoo today announced that Kipenzi, one of Seneca Park Zoo’s female Masai giraffes, gave birth to a calf early this morning. This is the third Masai giraffe born at Seneca Park Zoo, and is the offspring of Kipenzi and Parker, who died earlier this year. The gender of the calf is not yet known.
““This is outstanding news. Kipenzi is a remarkable giraffe and is a great mother,” said County Executive Bello. “I am proud and thankful for both the Animal Care team and the Zoo’s Veterinary Health team for their caring and diligent work this morning.”
Mierlo, November 30, 2023 – A healthy polar bear has been born in Dierenrijk. The delivery took place peacefully in the Frimas polar bear maternity. Mother and the newborn are doing well.
Head animal caretaker Stephan Rijnen: "In early November, we noticed that the mother was retreating to the maternity room. From this, we could deduce that the mating we observed in March was likely successful! A polar bear gestation lasts about eight months, so we had to wait a bit. Tuesday morning, we reviewed the camera footage and discovered good news! A young polar bear the size of a guinea pig was lying with mother Frimas."
SAN DIEGO (Nov.15, 2023) — There is a new, tiny face at the San Diego Zoo. A De Brazza’s monkey was born Oct. 28 to parents Lillie and Augustus, and it is the first De Brazza’s monkey born at the Zoo in 26 years. The little primate, whose gender has not yet been determined, can be seen holding tightly to its very attentive mother’s chest while they bond. In the next few weeks, the infant is expected to start walking and climbing. It will stay close to its mother until it is weaned, at around 1 year old.
On this Thanksgiving Day, Zoo Miami is excited and proud to officially announce the birth and provide the first images of a critically endangered Sumatran tiger! In addition to the profound importance that this birth has to the overall conservation efforts regarding these iconic big cats, it is especially meaningful to everyone at Zoo Miami following the recent loss of “Berani,” our adult male Sumatran tiger. In a bittersweet story of the “Circle of Life,” Berani is the father of this beautiful cub which will hopefully be an important addition to his already wonderful legacy.
