Wonderful White Rhino Calf

A southern white rhinoceros made its public
debut June 4. The spunky female, which remains unnamed, was seen
tearing across its enclosure at the Dublin Zoo in Ireland. The mother,
Ashanti, kept a close watch on her calf.

Time for a nice cozy nap after all that skipping about.

White rhinos are the second-largest land
mammals after the elephant. Once facing extinction, the species remains
critically endangered. Telling a white rhino from a black one is a
guessing game — since both are gray in color! It's unclear how white
rhinos received their name. Both white and black rhinoceroses mainly
live in eastern and southern Africa while other varieties reside in
Asia.

    The name “White Rhino” is actually an anglicized version of an Africans word that doesn’t mean white (but sounds sort of like it). ;p

    Ah, I see that someone else beat me to it ;). Yes, “white” is mangled over from the Afrikaans “wijd” meaning ‘wide’.
    How can you tell the black and white rhinos apart? White rhinos are bigger and have a wide square lip, as opposed to the pointy lip of the smaller black rhino.

    At about this same time, the Dublin Zoo also had the first ever Bull Elephant Calf born in Ireland and a giraffe… they had another giraffe in January this year as well.

    I feel terribly sorry for these poor, poor, animals. the goverment of Africa should be putting laws for CONTROLLED hunting and put hunters on hold for 3 years for reprudution.
