Sydney's Taronga Zoo is celebrating the recent birth of its first pygmy hippopotamus in 23 years.

Monifa was born about three weeks ago and weighs six kilograms or about thirteen pounds. When compared with a normal full sized adult hippo weighing between 3,000 – 4,500 kilograms (6,500 – 10,000 pounds) you get an idea of what a mini hippo Monifa really is.

Monifa was born about three weeks ago and weighs six kilograms.

The endangered hippos come from the lowland tropical forests of western Africa.

Senior zoo keeper Renae Zammit says the birth of Monifa is extremely important.

"There's less than 3,000 of them in the wild. Their population is declining all the time with wars and deforestation, pollution and all that sort of stuff," she said.

"Every hippo that's born in a zoo is helping to support the declining wild population."

Ms Zammit says Monifa is about the size of a small dog.

"Really small, she can fit into my two hands," she said.

"It's quite amazing when a lot of people see her they just go, "Oh my god, I can't imagine that it's that small!'."

She says the birth was a bit of a struggle for zoo keepers.

"Monifa was actually born backwards, a breech birth, so the labour was quite long and may have potentially caused her problems when she was born," she said.

"She should have been up and running within the first hour of her life but she was actually quite weak and couldn't stand up so we had to step in and help her and supply food."

Pygmy hippos are solitary animals so both parents have been returned to their own zoos.

I don’t understand this: “Pygmy hippos are solitary animals so both parents have been returned to their own zoos.”
What happens in the wild? Would a 3 week old hippo be completely abandoned by its parents and left to fend for itself?

Here’s an excerpt from an article in the Australian:
“Because they are so rarely ever spotted in the wild, most of the research recorded about the species [pygmy hippos] has been learned from those cared for in zoos.
Monifa – which means “I am lucky” in Nigerian – was separated at birth from her mother and father for her own safety. In any case she would have rejected her mother by the time she was a year old.
“This is the only period of her life when she will interact with her keepers, or indeed with any other living creature,” Ms Zammit said.
The zookeeper said they had hoped that the baby’s mother Petre would be able to raise her, but signs of aggression towards her daughter finished that.
“She definitely would have died if we didn’t step in,” Ms Zammit said. ”
I think this is a tough decision zoo vets often have to make. Most people agree that babies are best raised by their conspecifics. But the reality is that there is a lot of infanticide in captivity and in the wild for a variety of reasons. Based on the parents’ behavior and their knowledge of the animals, zoo vets and keepers have to weigh the benefit of the baby being raised by its own species versus the risk that it will die or be killed without intervention. It is certainly not a decision I’d like to make!

As it’s a known fact that miniature animals are cute and infant animals are generally adorable (well, mammals, avians and reptiles, at least), a baby pygmy hippo is almost too much for me to handle. Just look at that short little muzzle or those stubby like feet! A-frigin’-dorable.
I love this blog so much.

I read that pygmy hippos carry a shining diamond in their mouths to help travel through thick forests at night; by day the pygmy hippo has a secret hiding place for the diamond, but if a hunter catches a pygmy hippo at night the diamond can be taken. Villagers sometimes believed that baby pygmy hippos do not nurse but rather lick secretions off the skin of the mother.

    Hi
I’m currently a student studying Specialist Hair and Media makeup, and mostly focusing on sculpture work. Do you know any exact measurements of the length and the width of the pygmy baby hippos as I am planning on sculpting one.
    Thank you
