The Newest, Cutest Baby Animals from the World's Zoos & Aquariums

Posted in , ,

Topping off the trifecta of cute and cuddly kitty cats are the rare and spectacular Pallas' Cats. These three were born in July at the Bramble Park Zoo in Watertown, South Dakota. The Zoo is especially proud of these curious little creatures because it has been trying to breed them for years. Well, congratulations!  Can I have one?

Pallas’ cats
are small brown-spotted cats a little larger than a large house cat.
They are found in Central Asian Steppes at elevations of up to 13,000
ft. The cats are highly endangered and are very difficult to breed in
captivity, and have young survive, due to disease.

"After several years,
we have done it and have three viable offspring that are soon to go on
to another zoo."

These offspring are then scheduled to breed once they are mature.
The zoo has been participating in a global Species Survival Plan
program for this species for about 4 years. This past year, the female
gave birth in April, but neither of the offspring survived.

"After the
kittens did not survive, we put the male and female together again and
assumed we had to wait until next year for another litter."

To everyone's surprise, on July 4th, she gave birth again. Up until this birth,
it was thought that this species had a very small breeding season and
when it was missed, it was missed for the year.

"Now that we know different, it means many more cats could be bred in
captivity.  We have contributed not only cats, but valuable information
to the program. Of course this is good news for the entire species!"

Bramble Park Zoo is a 20 acre AZA accredited zoo in northeaster South Dakota.

Wow, those cats are ridiculously cute, too bad when they grew up they would like nothing more than to feast on my corpse.

A full-grown pallas cat is only 60 cm (2 feet) and 3.5 kg (8 lbs) . A creature that size would have a hard time making a meal out of anything larger than a small dog, I would guess.

Can you imagine if one of these animals attacked a human? Do you ever worry about that happening? I have a cute cat at home that is as mean as she is cute! I’ve been looking at

Either way, those are sweet pictures–they look just like kittens only a little bit chubby! Their youth is evident given the statistics you provided about these amazing creatures size.

What beautiful animals. And what a lot of fur on these little ones! How wonderful to have three healthy babies, too. I think the one on the right looks like a little ol’ man!

As The New York Times wrote in 2007, “Until recently the cat was commonly believed to have been domesticated in ancient Egypt, where it was a cult animal.” A study that year found that the lines of descent of all house cats probably run through as few as five self-domesticating African Wildcats (Felis silvestris lybica) circa 8000 BC, in the Near East

I really want one of these! They’re so cute! Fell in love with one at a zoo last time I went, it was so adorable, but it makes me sad to think of them in cages, considering my cat goes insane if we keep her in for one day, I can’t imagine how hard it is for these types of cats to be kept in a confined space.

I love the look of them, but at the same time, we should release them back out into the wild and leave them alone. They are wild! The problems begin with our precious environment when MAN finds something cute, he has to cage it up and sell it for money. It’s just wrong. I understand that they are in a zoo, but that is not the proper environment for these wild cats. I hope that they release them, rather than encourage people to start trapping and selling. That would be sad.

They are being bred and raised in a zoo because they are an endangered species! This helps ensure their survival. They can’t just release them back out into the wild with the mother, most likely they would not survive. Please read about how endangered species are saved before you go spouting off. The zoo is not selling these animals.
