The Newest, Cutest Baby Animals from the World's Zoos & Aquariums

Posted in , ,

My wife and I visited the Bronx Zoo during a recent snow storm and, to our delight, we had the place to ourselves. We spent a long time watching a mama tree kangaroo busy protecting her joey snuggled safely in pouch. While the baby kangaroo didn't emerge that day, we are delighted to share these new pictures of him and his proud mom courtesy of the Wildlife Conservation Society.

Matschie's Tree-kangaroo lives in the mountainous rainforests
at high elevations, living alone or in very small groups, usually comprising just a
mother, joey and a male. They spend most of their time in the trees and
come down occasionally to feed. Like all kangaroos, they are are quite the hoppers and can
leap up to 30 feet (9 m).

I never heard about that animal. Good idea I you wanna have the Zoo for yourself btw, go when there’s a snow storm… 😛

Definitely recommended. We also saw the young snow leopards romping and wrestling in their outdoor enclosure, all covered in the white stuff. Then, inside the reptile house, the keepers, surprised to see visitors, invited us to watch the feeding of their reticulated boa: amazing!

The Tree Kangaroo at the Saint Louis Zoo had a baby this year. Very cute little Joey.
I love going to the Zoo in the winter time, the lack of people can often create a place where you can see more than usual. I have been invited many times behind the scenes during these times. Early morning is also another good time to go.

A couple of the keepers knew how to “summon” the Snow Leopards closer, by climbing a bit closer to the enclosure than would be allowed for visitors, and darting back and forth. It was great because the reaction on the part of the snow leopard was just like a domestic cat catching sight of a moving toy: arched back and ready to play. I doubt I would have seen that if there were more visitors around.
