The Newest, Cutest Baby Animals from the World's Zoos & Aquariums

Posted in , ,

Kind of like a guinea pig, but with longer legs, agoutis range between Central and South America and some of the nearby islands. This baby Brazilian agouti was born January 11, 2009 at the the LA Zoo. These rodents are remarkable for their ability to jump up to six feet straight up from a standstill.

Agoutis tend to eat fallen fruits and nuts as well as succulent plants.  One of the few animals capable of breaking open the pods of the Brazil nut tree, they have a symbiotic relationship with the tree.  After they open the pods, agoutis bury the extra nuts over a wide area.  The seeds that aren’t later retrieved by the agoutis for food will grow into new trees.

“Agouti” is a word that comes from native Brazilian language Tupi, called “Cutia” or sometimes “Cotia”, in Portuguese.
They are small wild animals, but because they are very docile and playful, they run relatively free inside an urban park in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They are curious, but shy and very skittish. The park is called Campo de Santana, in the centre of the city. You can also see them at the City Zoo, in Quinta da Boa Vista, in São Cristóvão neighbourhood.Google it, and enjoy 🙂

Agoutis is such a adorable creature, especially I love the fluffy fur,it looks slick in the light, must be quick in the water! Their eyes are beautiful, the shape is so human that I think it looks a little weary, must be swimming all day. The baby agoutis is so tiny in hand that I just wish I can touch it, it is as cute as my hamsters. I am kind of shock that it can jump up to six feet straight up from a standstill! It just don`t looks like the thin legs can do such work! With collecting nuts that they hide in the woods and their food and the habitual eating behavior help the forest grow new trees! So they are actually fairies in the woods. What a amazing animal they are~!
