Pagi, a female Bornean sun bear cub whose name means morning in a Malayan dialect, reassures her brother, Palu, who is named after a valley in Borneo, as they made their public debut at the San Diego Zoo today.

The 5-month-old bears surpassed their keepers expectations by exploring every inch of their habitat, including the highest points of their climbing structures. The twins are only the third Bornean sun bear litter to be born in North America, all of which have occurred at the San Diego Zoo, where researchers are studying reproductive biology and maternal care of the sun bear. Visitors to the San Diego Zoo can learn more about these cubs and the five other bear species during Zoo Discovery Days: Bear Bonanza March 19-22.
