The Secret Lives of (Baby) Seahorses

Yesterday the Monterey Bay Aquarium unveiled its newest exhibit, The Secret Lives of Seahorses, showcasing 15 species of seahorses, sea dragons, pipehorses and pipefish. Seahorses are unique in the animal kingdom because the male becomes pregnant and gives birth. The tiny babies stay close to their protective father by clinging to nearby plants with their strong tails.

    Absolutely fascinating! Absolutely amazing! Thank you so much for this. I have always found seahorses to be magical creatures, and difficult to believe they are real. They could be creatures out of The Adventures of Alice Through the Looking Glass…

    If you are in the UK, you can see a smaller, but still amazing, seahorse exhibit at the Sea Life Sanctuary in Scotland, near Oban on the west coast. We were enthralled.

    Wow! Those pictures are amazing! And now I can say that I’ve seen a seahorse giving birth. That had to be on my list somewhere!

    I have raised dwarf seahorses before! They are absolutely fascinating to watch! Just a small correction, though, the male isn’t protective at all, once they’re born, he doesn’t care what happens to them.

    You think Sea Horses and you think, no big deal… WRONG!!! I’ve been to this exhibit a number of times and it is simply amazing. I’ve seem grown macho dudes in awe taking pictures with their iphones so it is a must see when in the Monterey California area!
