Very adorable, but panther is not a species of cat. It can refer to leopard, jaguar or puma. These obviously aren’t the latter, but I would love to know what they are!

You might be thinking of Cheetahs which are not representative of the cat group (atypical).

Actually, she’s right. While panthers are a Big Cat, yes, they are not their own species. That’s what she was saying. They are a melanistic (dark in colour) jaguar or leopard. Please refer to the wikipedia article YOU cited.
