The Newest, Cutest Baby Animals from the World's Zoos & Aquariums

Posted in , ,

Had enough of exotic kittens?  We didn't think so, but it's high time we represented the reptiles. These pictures taken yesterday at the National Zoo present pythons in a new light. Be careful though, adult green tree pythons grow to seven feet in length! Thanks to Linda Lombardi for the pictures and info.

The young are polymorphic, which means they come in many different colors, including various shades of yellow, red, and orange.

Here's one from a year ago which shows a young python learning the ropes from Mom. Wild green tree pythons always turn green in adulthood.

I hope they name him Monty. I wonder how they know if a baby python is male or female?

Monty! LOL! I never thought I’d say ‘cute’ and ‘snake’ in the same sentence, but there you have it! I love how they wrap themselves around a stick/branch.

Wow! I guess he’s pretty cute right now. I still don’t think I would hold him.

That’s adorable esp. when the babies are wrapped around the trees.

They are all just adorable! Unfortunately this species doesn’t make a good pet.

Well, green tree pythons don’t make good pets if you want a snake to handle. They do, however, make fascinating display animals.
I’m so glad to see this on zooborns! Reptiles need love too!

Please don’t name the snake Monty. Everyone who I’ve ever known who’s owned a python has named it Monty, and they all think they’re fantastically original. Lovely snakes though!

Nice pictures! The National Zoo has one of the nation’s best reptile collections, as well as a lot of other great exhibits.

There are a variety of sexing techniques for reptiles. Some snakes you can tell just by looking. For example, male ball pythons have ‘spurs’ near the cloaca and kingsnakes’ tails vary in length depending on whether they are male or female. The most sure-fire way is to use what is called probing – someone sticks a probing tool inside the snake’s cloaca and depending when it stops, it will determine whether the snake is male or female. Probing should only be done by very experienced herpetologists who know exactly what they are doing, otherwise the snake could be seriously injured or even killed.
