The Newest, Cutest Baby Animals from the World's Zoos & Aquariums

Posted in ,

Red Pandas, also known as firefoxes, may be called pandas but are actually more closely related to raccoons than Giant Pandas. However, watching the video below might lead you to believe they are most closely related to giant fluffy caterpillars. The Calgary Zoo's newest little firefox, Keti, debuted last week.

Pssst, it’s “firecat”. “Firefox” is a web browser.

no, no, “firefox” is correct. the red panda is also known as the lesser panda. where do you think mozilla got the logo from? looks like a red panda to me…

“Lesser panda” is an archaic term that is demeaning to an animal that was the original “panda”. I cringe every time I hear or see this. No one who loves this adorable creature should ever use this term.

What a delightful creature! Her fur is so beautiful! And I’m delighted to hear where the name “firefox” is from. And I’m glad she boxed dad’s ears. Seems she has quite a little personality already and it seems she will be quite a good little mother some time in the furure with her assertive personality. I like those cute little ear tufts, too.

She is SO cute. However, the suggestion that Red Pandas are less of a “panda” than the Giant Pandas is absolutely false. Red pandas are the ONLY member of the panda family (Ailuridae). Giant Pandas are now technically classified as bears.

Really? DEMEANING to the animal? Gimme a break… it’s an animal, not an ethnic group. We get to call them whatever we want. We’re the ONLY ANIMALS WITH LANGUAGE, remember?

What the Holy Heck: The web browser Firefox was NAMED after the red panda. Please do your research before correcting others.
Both Firefox and Firecat, as well as Lesser Panda, are correct. Lesser in no way demeans the animal, it’s simply due to size.
