The Newest, Cutest Baby Animals from the World's Zoos & Aquariums

Posted in , ,

The endangered Painted Hunting Dog or African Wild Dog once numbered as many as 500,000 individuals but human population growth has shrunk that number to only about 3,000. Almost unheard of among social mammals, the Painted Hunting Dog's social structure is a submission-based hierarchy, meaning whoever begs the most gets the most food instead of whomever is most aggressive.

These nine pups were born just days ago at the Pittsburgh Zoo but sadly the mother died shortly thereafter. Luckily a surrogate mixed breed dog was found who was happy to step-in.

ORPHANED AFRICAN PAINTED DOG PUPPIES FIND NEW MOM

(Pittsburgh) (November, 2009)—A domestic mixed-breed dog is acting as a surrogate mom for nine African painted dog pups after their mother died just a few days following their birth. “Vega, our 10-year-old female African painted dog, gave birth to a litter of pups last Sunday. As a first-time mom she was doing very well,” says Dr. Barbara Baker, president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. “The pups were nursing and Vega was very attentive to her brood.” On Wednesday, keepers noticed that Vega seemed lethargic and by 4 p.m. she stopped moving. “We are all very saddened by Vega’s death,” says Dr. Baker. “Our keepers develop close relationships with their animals and feel the loss very deeply.” A necropsy determined that Vega died from a ruptured uterus. Doctors also found that Vega retained one pup in her uterus, which may have contributed to the rupture.

The mother’s death put the pups’ lives in great jeopardy. “The mortality rate for African painted dog pups is 50 percent, even with a healthy mother,” says Dr. Baker. “Our dilemma was whether to attempt to hand-raise the pups or to contact the local animal shelters to find a female dog that had just given birth and was nursing her pups.” The Zoo started a search for a surrogate mom and the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society had the perfect candidate – a mixed-breed named “Honey” who had delivered six pups several weeks earlier. Staffers had just started weaning Honey’s pups so she was still able to nurse.

Honey and the African painted dog pups took to each other almost immediately. There are nine pups, six males and three females. “Of course it is still a tentative situation and we are keeping a close watch, but so far everything seems to be good,” says Dr. Baker.

The Zoo has two male dogs-Draco and Puck. African painted dogs are endangered, with only 3,000 to 6,000 remaining in the wild. The Zoo is part of a conservation effort to protect these wonderful animals.

What a sweet story! And you rescued a dog in the process! What happens to her after these pups are weaned?

I was worried about the mom’s original pups as well. Did they do okay weaning instantly like that?
It’s so sad that the mother died. =(

That Honey needs to be adopted after her hard work! I think that is one beautiful dispositioned canine who deserves a forever home.

Thanks for the good wishes everybody. We’re definitely going to make sure that Honey gets a fantastic home. We’ll put an update on our site once she gets settled into her new place.
(and sorry for the lack of sound in the video. I’ve spend a week fighting with the mic on that camera and it failed me at a really inopportune time)

How will the African Wild Dogs be raised after they are weaned from Honey? Will being raised with 2 adult males provide enough socialization for the pack?

I can’t believe the Zoo didn’t have the presence of mind to do an ultrasound on Vega after she gave birth. This should be a standard protocol for a bitch because having a pup get stuck is NOT UNUSUAL, and when you have a species that is endangered, why not take this extra precaution?? The equipment is RIGHT THERE in the zoo.
    Saddened? Guilt is more appropriate.

10 years old. Wow, that’s pretty old to be having puppies.

while it is sad the mum died, i am wondering if the zoo went too far breeding her at her age? i also wonder why they didn’t do a thorough check up on her, including ultrasounds to make sure the uterus was okay, after the birth, especially considering this is an endangered species. is nine to ten pups normal for those kind of dogs? the poor surrogate mum, it looked like she didn’t have enough nipples. i think zoos need to really think about what they do regarding breeding and realize just like with humans there is a limit on how many times the female should be giving birth and when to stop. i mean 10 years old and still being bred?

Well, all those caveats aside, the pups look extremely healthy and vigorous and it is good work you have done, to have added 9 more young to boost the numbers of such a seriously endangered species. Congratulations!

We met breifly at Bonnie’s veiwing. We met at your car. Later you commented on my comment on her obituary page. You may not remember me, however I never forgot your thought around the burial of the animals.
We spoke at your car, I was in a pretty sad state. You said something like you must have known her, which was so true. Then you talked about your dream of a burial of the animals stuffed and hung. That has never left my thoughts and I have been gathering the team I believe can make it happen. Let me know if you want to talk about it. I have a feeling we could make it happen in a respectful and visable way.
I lost your info, however you gave it to me when we spoke at your car that day.
    Maureen….
