The Newest, Cutest Baby Animals from the World's Zoos & Aquariums

Posted in , , ,

These tiny twins are the newest addition to the Pygmy Marmoset family in Houston Zoo’s Natural Encounters rainforest. Weighing in at about a half ounce as babies, marmosets are the smallest monkey in the world.

For anyone who likes marmosets, this YouTube video is a must. Several warnings, though: It’s an “earworm”; after hearing this, you’ll never hear the song the same, and you may never hear or read the word “marmoset” without thinking of the song. Also, before complaining that one of the animals shown is not, in fact, a marmoset, watch till the end.

Also, I think it’s specifically the Pygmy Marmoset that’s the smallest monkey in the world (per Wikipedia); there are 24 other kinds of marmosets that are larger.
I haven’t been to the Houston Zoo since the early 1970s, but I have fond memories of the building (not sure if it was called Small Mammals, or Primates) where the slow loris and the galagos were kept. The building had an area where the lights were low during daytime and bright at night, so the nocturnal animals were active during the hours the zoo was open. I think that’s where the galagos (bushbabies) were. I could watch those little bundles of cute energy for an hour. Hard to believe that they and the slow loris are in the same Infraorder; they sure don’t behave the same. Whatever this Natural Encounters exhibit is, if it’s more fun than that, it’s a lot of fun.

Glad you liked the video! The Natural Encounters Building is one of our newer exhibits (2005) – it is in fact built where the Small Mammal World used to be. Here’s some info about it and a few pics: http://www.houstonzoo.org/NaturalEncountersExhibits/
