The Newest, Cutest Baby Animals from the World's Zoos & Aquariums

Posted in , ,

We can't get enough of the Pittsburgh Zoo's Painted Hunting Dogs. Their submissive nature is very much on display in this adorable video as they build up the courage to collectively take a dip. (Note that the sound goes in and out.)

See more of the little guys here and here.

Pretty sure one of them pees around 1:23

I think that might be one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen.

You can see where one is taking a dominant position, and one is the lowest in the pack. It’s interesting to see that in puppies so young.

With those big ears I’ll bet they have great hearing.

There were nine puppies to begin with, but we only see five in the last couple of videos. Did something happen to the other four?

Any news yet on the surrogate Mom?
Has she been adopted into a forever home?

@Diana: Four of the original nine died a few weeks after birth. Even with a mom, the survival rate for painted dogs is only 50 percent. We’re happy to report that the remaining five are doing very well (as you can see).
@Jean: Yes, Honey, the surrogate mom, found a great home when she was adopted by one of our zoo volunteers.
@YM: They do have great hearing. The big ears also act as radiators, helping to keep them cool in the African heat, kind of like a fennec fox.

I’m so very happy to hear that Honey found a forever home!
    A beautiful story all around!
    Thanks for the update!
