The Newest, Cutest Baby Animals from the World's Zoos & Aquariums

Posted in ,

Pics taken last week at the Jordan Zoo show jaguar mom Lolo enjoying a good wrestle (and occasional nibble) from her newborn cub. Unlike her spotted cub, Lolo is melanistic, which means she possesses and exhibits more dark pigmentation than a typical jaguar.

I’ve heard conflicting stories: some say a puma is what you call a black jaguar, and some say a puma is a different species (and a black jaguar comes from a mix of the two). Can anyone clear this up for me?
I love these photos, thanks so much for sharing them.

A puma is the common name of the cougar or mountain lion, and it’s also the name of the genus of cats containing the mountain lion and the jaguarundi. Because it’s a common name, however, it is not uncommon for it to be used to describe any wild North American cat.
A black jaguar just has a (relatively rare) genetic trait that makes it darker than other members of its species, in the same way that some people have dark hair. It isn’t a different species (or mix of species) from any other jaguar.

These are beautiful pictures. So, what you’re saying is, her cubs will not turn black. Only cubs that are born black, stay black?

I bet Mom’s learned her lesson and will have TWO cubs next time.

@Linda: Yes, that’s correct. They are either born black or not. But all of them have spots! If you look closely at mom above, you can just make out her spots in the 2nd picture from the bottom. The melanism gene that mom has occurs in about 6% of the population, I believe.

Mom’s got that same long-suffering expression as Bagheera from Disney’s animated Jungle Book.
    What great pics.

Adorable jaguar kitten. Amazing to see the kitten looking different than its mother.

My opinion that the Creator made CATS the standard for beauty is upheld – along with the obvious fact that when needed they have patience and a sense of humor! (Thank you for these eye-wateringly beautiful shots.)

It makes me really, really glad I can take my kid out to play with other kids. If we were trapped day in and day out in our house, just the two of us…we’d both be dead in a week! Poor mom…
    Very, very cute. =D

This is very much false. A black Jaguar is just a Jaguar, just has more melanin than a typical jaguar 😊
