The Newest, Cutest Baby Animals from the World's Zoos & Aquariums

Throughout February and March, the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park welcomed a small army of new yellow footed tortoise hatchlings. Also known as the Brazilian giant tortoise, these reptiles live in pockets throughout much of South America but are vulnerable to extinction. As adults, these tortoises make a raspy cooing sound. We here at ZooBorns would love to hear a tortoise talk!

They are very cute. Are they bred here to be let go in the wild? If not, what happens to the ‘army’ we see here?

tortoises of any breed are quite a sight while they eat. I had three california desert tortoises (captive bred, of course. it is highly illegal to remove a california desert tortoise from the wild. on the same note, it is illegal to release a captive-bred california desert tortoise into the wild) and always enjoyed watching the trio nomnom on their favorite lettuces and fruits. The have these wee little pink tongues that they stick out of their mouth before biting down.
