The Newest, Cutest Baby Animals from the World's Zoos & Aquariums

Bactrian camels are critically endangered in the wild and the St. Louis Zoo is helping to preserve the species with their latest birth. This shaggy little male calf, born to parents Minnie and Elvis, will reach 1,600-1,800 lbs. in adulthood! Camels are famous for carrying people across the deserts of the Middle East and Africa but they actually originated in North America and migrated across the Bering Strait.

More information from the St. Louis Zoo's press release:

A male
Bactrian camel (pronounced BACK-tree-an) was born at the Saint Louis Zoo on March
11, 2010 weighing 98 pounds. Eli can be seen with his parents, Minnie and
Elvis, and the rest of the camel herd at Red Rocks.

The
critically endangered species is native to Mongolia in central Asia.  Baby
camels are born with two humps, like their parents, but at birth these lay flat
against their sides until they can store up energy-rich fat.

Camels can
survive without water for long periods of time, and energy-rich fat stored in
their humps enables them to survive long periods without food.

Pregnancy in
camels lasts for 11 months and calves are
generally born in March and April. Spring is also the time when Bactrian camels
completely shed their thick dark winter coat, leaving them almost hairless
during the hot summer months.

Although
domesticated Bactrian camels number in the millions, there are less than 1,000
wild camels left in their native range in Mongolia.

We were the owners of Elvis, here in San Diego, California. We raised him from
the age of 4 months to 7 years. We brought him for Colorado to our ranch in
the San Pasqual area of San Diego. He was raised with people and a german
shepard dog which he would never be without named Harry. We would take
Elvis to Ramona and he loved people and would love showing himself to everyone.
He thought of himself as a person, not a camel. Loved people. He would watch us for hours through the hatch door at our ranch house. I think he just loved
human company. We could ride him and he loved human
kisses. We thought that maybe he would have a better life and offered him
to the San Diego Zoo, and or to the Wild Animal Park near his home. We thought
he was missing his life with other camels and wanted to give him a good life
with other camels. The San Diego Zoo took Elvis. Once he was introduced to the other Camels, he got in a fight. I think he did not understand other camels. He
was so use to people and the other pets at our ranch. The zoo placed Elvis away from the other camels at the zoo. He lived in a back area away from the other camels. It was sad to see him alone. I would tell the keepers that they did not
understand him and it may take him time to adjust to the other camels. The zoo
keepers thought they knew more than I…but they did not raise Elvis
for seven years old. They did not know he needed attention from
humans daily. They moved Belle in with Elvis. That seemed to be good.
Being that we no longer owned Elvis, we really did not have any say…We were
saddened when the San Diego Zoo decided to send Elvis to the Kansas City Zoo. If we had know this was going to happen, we may of thought differently of giving him up. We have stayed in contact with a zoo keeper and understand that Elvis is okay. The baby is thought to be Elvis which recently has been sent to our San Diego Zoo. Camels such as Elvis do know compassion, and love. We miss Elvis here in San Diego. May all enjoy this special creature with a heart of gold.
