Superb – Sacramento Zoo is very lucky. And the mother tiger scares me.

Now that I’ve seen a tiger cub stumble and heard him(?) squeak, I can die happy.

Tigers are the most amazing animals. Since I was young, I wanted one for myself. I’m not scared by their size or their power. I’m awed. To see one so young is a joy. And to know that there is such a bond between mother and cub at this age is a joy to behold.

These are lovely videos and the animals are gorgeous. But it’s heartbreaking to watch them living in what looks like – and essentially IS – a prison cell.

McMelis – I certainly understand your concern but this is only the behind the scenes birthing area. In the wild, tigers look for dark, safe, secluded places to give birth and care for their young cubs so this is actually a fairly comforting environment.

But…the dark secluded safe places in the wild are harder and harder to fine as we continue to cut the rain forests for capitol gain. The video was reality but nothing takes the place of their natural habitat. -
Umm, every time I click to play those videos, I’m taken to the last time they were mentioned in March.

Why is this happening? -
At the end, when I see that mother’s enormous paw reach out and scoop up her frustrated-and-squeaking infant, I just smile. And for some reason, my kittens love watching this kitten play. I could probably play the video on a continuous loop and they would stay parked in front of the computer screen!

Have to say I agree it looks awfully prison-like — it’s hard to believe that those hard sterile bare manmade surfaces are experienced as being anything like the Sumatran jungle. I would really love to see these animals, and I’ll be in Sacramento next month, but I think I would find it too upsetting.
