The Newest, Cutest Baby Animals from the World's Zoos & Aquariums

Posted in ,

On Friday we brought you the story of a little Eurasian Lynx cub born at the Nashville Zoo during last week's torrential flooding. Today we bring you the second storm baby, a Baird's tapir calf named "Noah." Little Noah was born in the midst of the thunder and pouring rain but seems no worse for wear. Baird's tapirs are the national animal of Belize and are commonly referred to as "mountain cows" in Central and South America, although they are more close related to horses and rhinos.

Their noses remind me of shortened Elephant’s trunks.
Sweet Noah and his lovely stripes.

L’il Noah looks a bit like a squash with all those stripes. Really cute.

That first photo might be THE cutest picture of a baby tapir I’ve ever seen! What an enthralling infant – it’s like a pot-bellied pig wearing a watermelon-meets-baby-deer costume. And that unique, expressive nose! Squeeee!

I wonder if he will keep or lose his stripes as he gets older. He sure is a lot cuter than his mama.

Mo Ky Fellow, he will lose the stripes. Many mammal babies have spots (like deer and many birds) or stripes (boars, tapirs) that they then later lose. It’s great camoflauge when you’re small and need to stay hidden from predators, but would get in the way later in life.
