The Newest, Cutest Baby Animals from the World's Zoos & Aquariums

With a gun in one hand and a sack of bobcat kittens in the other, an Alabama hunter proudly plopped the newborns down on the counter and asked the veterinary assistant to raise them so he could eventually give them to his kids as pets. The vet tech was stunned, but quickly recomposed herself and told the hunter she would see to the welfare of the kittens, but didn't disclose that she had no intention of turning them into pets. She immediately turned to the internet for an expert in rehab and release and identified Carole Baskin of Big Cat Rescue. It was agreed that the kittens would go to Florida for care and eventual re-release back into the wild.

It took three days to secure the Florida import permit and time was of the essence. The only kitten formula available to the clinic was known to result in dehydration in bobcat kittens. The second more critical factor was that their eyes would be opening any day and if they were to ever to live free, it was imperative that they not bond to humans. They never make good pets, but the bonding that takes place during the nursing stage could make them fearless of people and that would get them into trouble as adults.

Big Cat Rescue put out a call to all of the Tampa animal based charities and on all of their social networks that they needed a nursing mother cat who had kittens of her own. Jack Talman of FosteringIsCool.com found a mother cat but her kittens were too old and she was going into heat so there was concern that she may not have milk nor interest for new babies.

The story, via bigcatrescue.org, continues after the jump…

Big Cat Rescuer, Merrill Kramer, called on Rick Chaboudy, CEO of Suncoast Animal League in Palm Harbor, FL and he said he thought he had a good candidate. Her name was Bobbi because of her half tail. She had given birth to 6 kittens of her own and then adopted two more. He found foster parents for all but two of the kittens and brought Bobbi and her brood over to see what she thought of diversifying her family.

Introductions like these can be very scary because the mother cat can be overly protective of her own kittens and fatally strike out at the new comers. President, Jamie Veronica, has had a considerable amount of experience in this area though and took every precaution to make sure it went well. However, Bobbi turned out to be a dream come true for the three little orphaned bobcats. She immediately pulled them in close to nurse and began to bathe them. The little bobcat babies were so startled that they hissed at her!

She ignored their resistance and just kept up the affection. Once they figured out that this strange smelling "bobcat" mom would nurse them, they were in love too.

Go, Bobbi! What a beautiful story! And great video, too.
I hope that hunter has a painful accident.

Did anyone think to report the hunter to authorities?

Unfortunately, it would be hurtful to the kittens to just let natural selection unleash its wrath on the hunter.

I can only imagine what had become of the mother bobcat. Sport hunting is barbaric.

Yea, Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Florida!!! This organization was voted Animal Planet’s Animal Hero of the Year this past December, 2009, and they really do deserve it! They have done alot of great work with big and medium sized cats for alot of years, and what they did to help foster the bobcat kittens was just a part of that work that they do so well! The pics of these baby bobcats are sooooo cute! Watched the 2 vids, too, and they were cute as well. Thanks for the update about these bobcats! Hope that they will do very well when they get back into the wild woods in a few more months!

Oh my goodness, they are beautiful! I hope they grow up strong and healthy and have awesome lives.
I want to give the hunter the benefit of the doubt, but he really doesn’t know much about bobcats if he thought they’d make good pets for children. I bet there’d be a lot less wanton and destructive hunting if people who wanted to hunt first took the time to really learn about the animals. Thank goodness for quick-witted vet techs and all the people who worked together to give the kittens the best possible chance at life.
I think the hunter’s punishment is that his kids are now mad at him!

The sad thing is unless someone reported him, he will probably go out do this again and keep the cubs and probably accidentally kill them by trying to give them formula. I am so happy to see the kittens doing well and they are lucky the hunter actually grabbed them and didn’t leave them in the wild alone, even if he was an idiot.

These bobcats cannot be released in another State but only where they are native to. Carole Baskin Big Cat Rescue is unethical, cruel and ignorant to Wildlife rehab. She is not a protector of animal life as she determines who has a right to life at her center. She is unnecessarily torturing, killing and feeding live domestic rabbits to her big cats. She is a disgrace to any professional wildlife rehab and a disgrace to any sanctuary and should be punished by Florida laws just as any person who is convicted for animal abuse. The Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center provides guidelines for rehabbing bobcats in Florida which advise feeding live prey it may encounter in its natural habitat. Domestic rabbits do not live in the wild. Her staff workers proudly take videos of throwing live domestic rabbits to cat pens while smiling, proudly take and display photos of workers holding dead or wounded rabbits that are brutally covered in blood and post them on facebook and youtube. Please call the USDA, ASPCA, HUMANE SOCIETY and all org’s who investigate animal abuse and file a complaint to stop this practice and ask that cruelty laws honored. These rabbits should be removed from this facility immediately. The info above is all over the internet, the workers in the photos are also shown as volunteers on her website.

If you think sport hunting is barbaric you’ve never seen how your food is raised and slaughtered.

Fur trade? For Germany and Russia? In regards to a squeamish feeder. I highly recommend avoiding all carnivorous animals if you are bothered by a feeder rabbit. What is more inhumain: taking pleasure is watching your charge with a healthy certified meal. Or going out and hunting a naturally wild animal to throw in there? You can not feed dead meat to something you are trying to introduce in the wild. They are not being inhuman. They are not tormenting those rabbits. Go find a vegetarian channel to watch if you can’t take feeding time.

Have you seen bobcats as house pets on youtube? Bobbi the bobcat I think is one. He looks like an amazing and affectionate pet to have! So to say they make bad house pets, sure, they can, every pet can make a bad house pet. But that isn’t to say all make bad house pets. We don’t know the full story of this hunter either, did he kill mom? Did he find them abandoned or mom dead near by? We don’t know. He might have been a great guy, with poor judgement for still holding a gun at a vets office.
Oh, and bobcats typically are a one person or family pet. So to be “raised” by that assistant, they wouldn’t have transitioned from her home to his very well at all.

What do you believe should be fed to big cats? Some purina cat chow? Should she trap undomesticated rabbits, then feed those instead to the cats? Pretty sure they would starve. Or maybe feed the cats some lettuce and carrots instead?
Sorry, but live meat is the best thing for these cats once they are off milk. They won’t survive or learn to “hunt” any other way than with some prey.
Sometimes being too sensitive hurts more, especially when the cycle of life is in play. Animals will keep inhumanely killing other animals to live.

The hunter brought them to someone that knew how to take care of them. Maybe he killed the mother not knowing she had babies. How many does are killed each year during the spring by cars not knowing if they have fawns or not. There are tons of people who have bobcats as pets. Big cat rescue is a scam and I do not support them or what they do. They give the animals “natural” habitats but spay and neuter them?! A wild animal shouldn’t be spayed and netured.

I agree they should not spay/neuter their cats.
