The Newest, Cutest Baby Animals from the World's Zoos & Aquariums

Posted in ,

Eel? Worm? Baby sea-monster? Actually Caecilians are amphibians like frogs and salamanders, but they lack any limbs and their eyes are tiny or non-existent. Most caecilians live underground in moist soil but Aquatic Caecilians, like these babies born at the Tennessee Aquarium July 18th, spend their lives wriggling within swamps, ponds and lakes.

While nearly all caecilians have lungs including Aquatic Caecilians, this species is also born with frilly, external gills, which can clearly be seen in the pictures below. The gills detach from the animal’s body shortly after getting its first breath of air from the surface. We recommend watching the video to see these bizarre critters in action.

Why doesn’t the aquarium staff take the toads away when the baby is born????? Even if they know it’s not going to be eaten, it has to be pretty traumatic for the newborn.

Maybe he has to learn from the minute he is born to stay away from predators!

Or maybe it gets him breathing quickly and efficiently 🙂

    “pretty traumatic…”
STOP APPLYING HUMAN EMOTIONS TO ANIMALS
seriously, Caecilians don’t have the mental capacity for, as you said, “Trauma”…all that clicks in there brain is “stay away from these things, else you will die and not be able to reproduce”
If the toads would have killed it, it would have meant that the animal was not fit to survive.
Also Caecilians are on the Least Concern list, so there is no danger in them dying at birth, they ain’t going away any time soon.

Trauma is not just a human emotion, come on. Amphibians are certainly capable of feeling trauma, distress, pain, etc.

The aquarium staff probably did not even know the female was pregnant as amphibians do not show pregnant bellies the way humans do. They probably also did not want to disturb the birth by removing other animals from the tank. Lastly, I am a vegan, a total animal lover to the death, but amphibians cannot feel “trauma”. Brain studies show they can only hold memories of events like this for a matter of seconds.

Caecilians are NOT AMPHIBIANS, they are lizards and, therefore, reptiles.

Oops. My mistake. Several other websites listed them as limbless lizards. When I looked up Order Gymnophiona it was listed in Class Amphibia.

I had one of the first live births in captivity in 1996, with 5 young, the mother was 3 feet long and the second birthing killed her with eight young unborn, she was breach. Horrible day for me. They love shrimp pellets and thick substrate to dig around in. Great escape artist! Lost 3 young that way. I had reported it to University of Berkeley Biology Dept, but at the time no one knew much about these wonderful amphibians. Had them for many years in a 70 gal aquarium. Thanks for sharing the birth of you babys.
