The Newest, Cutest Baby Animals from the World's Zoos & Aquariums

Posted in ,

Earlier this month, Sweden's Parken Zoo welcomed two new Sand Cat kittens. Small and stocky, the Sand Cat's oversized ears help to dissipate heat and detect prey scurrying along the sand, much like the Fennec Fox. Watching the curious kittens exploring their enclosure can't help but make you think of their domestic cousins. Thanks to Mats Ellting for the photos.

Oh, they’re so adorable!!!! I want one…it would be so much fun to raise one of these pretty girls…I wonder how large they can get?
We toilet trained our housecat…I wonder if these little ones could be taught as well.
    Love them!!

I heard that sand cat has been domesticated in northern Africa, and some middle east. I think if you really want it, you have to process legally for getting cutty.

Kyoot is right… I’d love to have one too, although I don’t know how well they’d take to eating out of can and I’d hate for them to go after the chipmunks who live under my neighbor’s patio.

You do know these are exotics, meaning they’re wild like lions, tigers, mountain lions? They look like domestic kittens right now, but they’re nod domesticated and will never be housepets. If you want to impress someone, get a cheetah kitten. It will be gentle as a tabby when its grown, and you can freak out people while you walk it down the street.

These Sand Cat kitten are certainly cute, and while the temptation to raise wild animals as pets is understandible, it is not a good idea. The time, work, and education required to properly care for a wild animal is often much more than a well intentioned owner anticipates. Often the creatures end up in the hands of animal shelters or refuges, or are simply left in the wild to fend for themselves once the owner decides its too much to handle. Wild animals will always display wild behaviors, which, while suitable in the wild, are in fact destructive in a household setting. Please adopt from your local ASPCA and help a creature who needs it.

Sandcats are actually smaller than domestic cats, only about 5-7 pounds!
