The Newest, Cutest Baby Animals from the World's Zoos & Aquariums

Posted in , ,

Katina, a 34-year-old killer whale, gave birth Saturday, October 9, at 7:28 p.m. in SeaWorld Orlando’s multimillion-gallon Shamu Stadium following a 45-minute labor. Moments later, the baby whale instinctively swam to the surface for its first breath. This is the seventh calf born to Katina, an 18-foot-long, 5,400-pound killer whale. “It’s a terrific day for all of us at SeaWorld,” said Kelly Flaherty-Clark, curator of animal training.  “Katina is an experienced mom and she appears to be bonding quickly with her baby.”

SeaWorld veterinarians and trainers remain cautiously optimistic about the progress of the baby and her mother and are encouraged by the bonding they’ve already seen. This calf is the 27th killer whale born at the SeaWorld parks in Orlando, Fla., San Diego, Calif. and San Antonio, Texas.  Sixteen whales have been born at SeaWorld Orlando. SeaWorld's killer whale breeding program is the most successful in the world.

How much does the calf weigh? Probably more than me, but he/she looks cute next to Mom.

FANS! The calf shouldn’t just remember Dawn! What about Taima, kalina,Sumar? Name suggestions:
Female-Hali’a meaning “cherished memory” remembering all of them and the joyous time!
Male-Hoku meaning “Star” in hawaiian. Stars bring guidance, hope, joy, and brightness just like Hoku does to EVERYONE!
Pass this down and tell everyone including the trainers if you agree with me!

Alas, another Orca born into bondage and captivity, doomed to live a shortened, deprived life in a concrete echo chamber, never to know the joys and trials of life in the wild, where all intelligent marine mammals belong.

i think that if the whale is a girl it should be MELINA, OR MEGAN. IF ITS A BOY JAKE, OR SHAMU JR.

They are NOT killer whales they are ORCAS and are the largest of the DOLPHINS .. NOT WHALES.
It behooves a site like this to use the correct term when referring to these animals.
The article does occasionally call them Orcas but more often than not insists on referring to them as killer whales.

I agree .. and they can’t even call them by their correct species name. Why do they insist on calling them killer whales when they are neither?

I don’t see what’s wrong with calling them “killer”. They’re carnivores, having a diet ranging from fish to marine mammals. They can’t eat them without killing ’em.
But just as well, names aren’t always accurate anyway. Don’t see why it’s a big deal. Plenty of legitimate scientific institutions use the name.
