The Newest, Cutest Baby Animals from the World's Zoos & Aquariums

Posted in , ,

As covered in August on ZooBorns, baby Nori's mom could not properly take care of her and North Carolina Zoo staff made the difficult decision to hand-raise her. Now three months old, baby Nori is doing well and the North Carolina Zoo Society is offering a special adoption package to commemorate this very special baby's birth. The $30 adoption package contains a copy of Nori’s birth certificate, a fact sheet about the young female, a button commemorating her birth and a photo. Proceeds from this special adoption will help support Nori and her companions at the N.C. Zoo as well as their wild relatives.

With 13 members in the troop, the N.C. Zoo has the largest chimp collection in any U.S. zoo. The zoo also has a strong conservation presence in Africa and supports conservation efforts in great ape range countries. We here at ZooBorns think adopting Nori would make a special gift for any animal lover this holiday season.

It's a long but exceptional video. Skip around if you get impatient, but don't miss it.

I don’t get it. Nori is obviously upset, hence the self-calming thumb sucking behavior. The keeper is not trying to alleviate her fear, but instead is dragging Nori’s thumb out of her mouth so that she can be fed.
Why is she being fed from a bowl with a spoon? This is hardly natural. (Neither is bottle feeding, I admit, but at least a rubber nipple simulates the mother’s.) How do chimpanzee mothers feed their young? Primates make tools, but I highly doubt spoons are among them.
Why is the keeper masked? I get the point that Nori must be protected from disease, but facial expressions are almost as important to chimpanzees as to us.
I do not think this is optimal care. It was painful to watch.

We here at ZooBorns understand your concerns and, while we are not experts in the field of chimp husbandry, we might be able to provide a bit of perspective.
One of the dangers of sharing videos like this is that people draw conclusions about an animal’s entire daily routine based on only a few minutes of video from their lives. As we often do in cases like this where the public expresses concerns, we will offer the zoo the opportunity to address them.
However, we will mention that accredited zoo employees involved in animal care put their animals’ welfare above all else. They work incredibly hard for very little money because they love animals and put their veterinary, biology and/or animal behavior degrees to great use. The well-being of this baby chimp is absolutely top of mind for the NC Zoo’s staff and we trust in their expertise.

It’s unfortunate that someone is so bitter and cynical that they can’t enjoy the beauty in this post and in the video. I guess it’d be better if they just left her to be with her mother who was unable to care for her, and allow her to be neglected or even die…after all, that’d be more natural. Ugh, whiny killjoys that jump to conclusions are so irritating.

I watched the video again after reading the comments given. While I agree that Nori appeared to be upset, perhaps her handler felt that at that particular moment that Nori’s nutrition was first priority. I too thought it looked a little sad and I personally would have hugged and stroked that baby but then I am not an expert in ANY field, especially caring for a little baby Chimpanzee. However…I feel that Marie’s comments were completely out of line. Lauren was merely expressing her opinion of what she saw and felt at that moment. We should all be allowed to speak our minds without being called names and bullied.

Really? First, I’m not sure saying someone is killjoy can really be considered name calling – especially when it’s so accurately descriptive. The definition of a killjoy is, one who spoils the joy and pleasure of others. ZooBorns and the NC Zoo are just trying to bring a little joy into this negative world and Lauren chose to visit this website and spoil the joy and pleasure of others who enjoy it with her negative comments. So, if the shoe fits…
Secondly – I, too, was “merely expressing my opinion of what I saw and felt at the time.” I’m not terribly concerned if someone calls me names or bullies me for it…I’m a big girl. People shouldn’t go out of their way to express their opinions unless they’re prepared to deal with others’ opposing opinions. I’m sure Lauren was just as aware of that when she posted her opinion as I was when I posted mine.

I thought this was wonderful..caring…and beautiful.
I see it as sheer devotion saving the life of this little tiny baby….who might otherwise have died for lack of care qand nutrition.

I really enjoyed watching the film and seeing what a great job the NC Zoo is doing. Life may not have began as “ideal” for this little chimpy baby with a mother who was not able to care for her. But how wonderful to be surrounded by all these awesome zoo caretakers who you CAN tell are so excited to be taking care of this adorable little animal. For human babies, at least, caretakers sometimes know what it best — time to take the thumb out of the mouth and get something to eat! And diseases are a matter of reality – and the facial masks and gloves are a necessary precaution!!! I am glad that the zoo staff take their responsibilities seriously and act out of precaution.

The ape is certainly stressed–sucking on thumbs/fingers it is not a normal behavior! And expert caregivers attempt to emmulate a mother ape by covering their chest with a furry fabric the infant can cling to (or even by carrying a large stuffed animal). It is more natural and if in the future a surrogate Mom is available the transition much smoother. These caregivers are untrained and not qualified, this is abusive! There are pet owners who are more appropriate. And to think they even posted a video of this behavior, Yikes! Certainly don’t donate any money to these people.
