Naming Miami’s Newest Arrival

The other day, we brought you news of Zoo Miami's Pygmy Hippo baby. Zookeepers are now asking the public to help choose between four names. "Nzuri", which means beautiful, "Nyumbani", meaning home, "Leona", a reference to Sierra Leone, and "Asali", meaning honey; a tribute to one of the Zoo's Hippo's which passed away last year. You can visit the zoo's survey now and cast your vote!

    Something is wrong with your computer program. I wanted to vote for the baby’s name, but when I tried, I got a message saying I had already done so! I DID NOT! How could I have? Last time I was on the site (yesterday) there was nothing about this new little pygmy hippo!
    I am most indignant!

    Zoo Elf, I tried your link. Still the same message – says I already voted.
    Well I never thought I’d say a hippopotamus was beautiful, but when it’s a baby, and a pygmy, with those dark soulful eyes and a hint of a smile… so maybe you could put in a vote for me (only once!)? I think it’s Nzuri that means beautiful. So that’s my choice of name.

    I kid you not this hippo was named after me when she was located in the Baton Rouge Zoo. I can even tell you her birthday, June 15, 1992. I would love to meet Kelsey the hippo in order to reunite. This makes my heart so happy!
