Rainbow Lorikeet chicks with mom 2

Two little Rainbow Lorikeets hatched last week at the Münster Zoo in the free-flying lorikeet aviary where visitors can feed the small birds cups of nectar. What makes the birth particularly interesting is where the parrot parents chose to build their nest – right by the walkway within parrot-seed-spitting distance from peoples' feet! While there were plenty of secluded treetop nesting options, the whole parrot family seems to enjoy the hustle and bustle of visitors and the increased attention. The Rainbow Lorikeet is native to much of Australia and Asia. They often fly in flocks but spend most of their time together in pairs.

Rainbow Lorikeets have great personality to match their plumage and pretty songs to add to all the other birdsong here in Sydney. Wonderful to see them here with their little babies! I feed rainbow lorikeets sliced apple some mornings. One of the best things about summer is the rainbow lorikeets sitting in the jacaranda tree when it is thick with mauve blossoms – vibrant colour in the sun!

When my son went into the lorikeet aviary in Long Beach at the aquarium, we had no idea the birds would captivate us so thoroughly. We spent most of the day with them. Forget the fish!

I love lorikeets! I fell in love with them at the Oregon Zoo. They let you go in and feed the Lories. Both the crowds and the birds can’t get enough of it! I now visit regularly just to feed these beauties!
