Baby Golden Snub Nosed Monkey clings to mom at Everland Zoo

In the wild, Golden Snub Nosed Monkeys spend 97% of their time in the trees and live in widely ranging social units from just five individuals to over six hundred! These Old World monkeys live primarily off lichen. Unfortunately loggers in China remove the dead trees that produce the tastiest and most abundant lichens, steadily destroying this beautiful primate's habitat. These pictures were taken at Korea's Everland Zoo by In Cherl Kim this past November and December.

I love animals, I love baby animals, and I love this site. But the first image simply freaks me out! The mother looks like an other wordly demon or something. Reminds me of The Golden Compass book badguys or a dementor in Harry Potter or something.. Basically child-time scariness!
Still, quite sad these guys arent doing too well. Hear about the other snub-nosed species that the only specimen discovered by scientists was shot and eaten by the local villagers shortly after?

These wonderfu creatures are going to be extint if China does not do something about the logging that is destroying their habitat. They are so cute and are a very close nit famiy unit. I pray for their existace to flourish.
