Bioparc Valencia - crías de potamoquero

Two Red River Hogs were born unexpectedly in early May at Bioparc Valencia in Spain. These colorful wild boars live in the African equatorial forest, typically near water. In recent years the population of this species has grown dramatically in accredited zoos, but the genetic pool is shrinking. International controls to prevent the spread of swine flu have made the transport of these hogs between foreign zoos for responsible breeding purposes more challenging. After a lot of red tape, the father of these tiny hoglets was finally sent to a German zoo where he could contribute genetic diversity, but not before clandestinely fathering these two little piggies.

The bliss on the hoglet’s face in the last picture… wow.

Such epic music for two little cuties.
Too bad they couldn’t feed at the same time.

love the way they were chasing the man around in circles! i guess that’s to make sure they get enough exercise?

Hmm, they shipped the father off, but where’s the mother? Usually in cases like this the description mentions that the mother rejected them so they had to be hand-raised. I would have guessed sows would have made good parents (lie on your side and let them nurse), so maybe something happened to her? I hope not.
And I join in wondering why they couldn’t use a second bottle to keep the hoglets from feeling competitive about the food — but maybe there’s only one keeper, and it’s clumsy if he tries to hold a bottle in each hand.

I had never even heard of red river hogs before Zooborns, and now they are one of my favorite animals.
