Baby Scorpions - Scorplings!!! 2

The Elmwood Park Zoo in Pennsylvania recently welcomed a brood of baby Emperor Scorpion known as "scorplings." Unlike most arachnids, baby scorpions are born alive! These tiny scorplings' shells have not yet hardened and they must ride on mom's back for safety. Emperor Scorpions are among the largest and lowest in toxicity, making them a popular pet, so much so that over-collecting could threaten this species in the wild.

Check out their tiny scorpling eyes!

They look like they are hanging onto mom for dear life. Do they ever fall off I wonder? If so, do they just crawl up onto mom’s back again when they have the chance?

This is awesome! My girl scouts spent the night at the zoo on Friday and the emperor scorpion was one of the animals that was brought in for the girls to see. The keeper handled the scorpion while the girls watched and asked questions. The one we saw was a male, but the girls asked about babies and the keeper told them all about the female carrying them on her back. They also got to see him under the special light and thought is was just amazing that he glowed! When we got home on Saturday from our zoo adventure, my daughter was checking out the app on my phone and got very excited to see this post!!!
