Oncilla Cub at Mata Cilliar

Today ZooBorns is proud to showcase our first Oncilla cub and first submission by Brazil's Mata Ciliar conservation organization. On August 16th, the Mata Ciliar Association received a call about an orphan Ocelot cub found near a controlled fire area (fire belt) in Brazil. Although the cub's mother most likely escaped the fire, she did not return for her cub. When staff arrived, they realized the cub was actually an Oncilla, a smaller relative of the Ocelot, and brought the cub back to their rehabilitation facility for hand-rearing. Only two months old, the cub is a healthy male. Staff named him Tost. Controlled burns for agricultural lands are one of the main causes of injured animals throughout Brazil.

The Mata Ciliar Association operates the largest feline conservation center in Brazil and focuses on conservation of the eight native species of felines in the region. The center provides research, education and conservation support in Brazil and twenty other countries.

Adorable. But why is it a cub and not a kitten? Isn’t an ocelot feline?

I looked up this type of cat (I like the Little Tiger Cat name). This little guy can be either a cub or a kitten

OMG very very cute! and I know how this little cub could make you say, “want!”
But a word to the wise: these are WILD cats and very much different from our kitties at home.
Working as a zookeeper in the 1980s, I helped care for several ocelots given up by their owners to the zoo. One was very timid and didn’t want any human contact. The other wanted contact but would self-mutilate when that kind of attention was given. We tried to distract him with toys, etc., but he was always a little neurotic.
Besides, there are lots and lots of cute, gorgeous domesticated kitties waiting for a home!
PS oncilla conservation status: vulnerable. see wikipedia

That’s got to be the best part of working at a zoo, getting to hand-raise kittens.
Or volunteering at a cat shelter to socialize kittens so they can be adopted. There is a good way for someone who’s kitten-mad to get a regular fix without winding up with thirty cats!
These are adorable kittens. I love this kind of story. I hope there’s ways to save habitat for the oncilla, sad that this kitten’s parents died.

Repeat after me: “All baby animals are cute, but some are cuter than others.” It’s very easy to fall in love with an oncilla. In fact, I’d be very suspicious of anyone who didn’t.
So it didn’t take me any effort at all to adore this little oncilla (oncillette?) Now, I’ve worked at appreciating a baby rhino, a baby hippo, a baby pygmy-hippo, baby parrots (you want to know what they look like? ever seen a plucked chicken?), and I thought I had a pretty good score. Till I saw baby and adult vultures. Now my score has crashed to the ground.
Perhaps vultures could borrow some cuteness from oncillas? Oncillas have lots extra that they could spare! I think that if that oncillette could really understand just how cute it was, it would evaporate out of sheer shock!!
You see that I’m in shock!!!

They are, too. Warning: they are not suitable pets, as they are extremely aggressive and will attack any domestic cats they meet
