The U.K.'s Bristol Zoo is celebrating the hatching of over 140 Antilles Pink-toed Bird-eating Tarantulas. At four weeks old, the spiderlings are now little more than the size of a 5p coin with a striking metallic steel blue-black colouring. Zoo guests can see the new arrivals in the window of the tropical breeding room in the Zoo’s Bug World.

Mark Bushell, assistant curator of invertebrates at Bristol Zoo, said: “This species is one of the most beautiful types of tarantula around. When the spiderlings first hatch, they are tiny and translucent but they gradually develop, moult and turn into little blue fluffy tarantulas and are very eye-catching”.

He added: “Breeding these spiders is a real achievement. It has been a fantastic experience for our team of invertebrate keepers and means now have the tools to successfully breed more species of arachnid in future, including some of the more endangered species.”

The Antilles pink-toed tarantula is one of the most popular tree spiders. It comes from Martinique, off the coast of South America, and is highly sought after because of its attractive adult coloration, along with a fairly docile temperament.

As young Antilles spiders mature, their blue colouring is replaced by its adult colours – a metallic green carapace and an abdomen covered in red hairs. Its long furry legs become swathed in reds, pinks, and browns. These tree spiders are very quick and agile.

In a way, that actually scares me more than an adult tarantula.

It’s funny how I can look at this and say.. Look how tiny..when in fact.. if this were any other type of spider I would have deemed it as HUGE and scary…

This is terrible. Now my roommate is very afraid of this site. Some people have big problems with spiders. Is there a safe tag to not see spiders/insects?

I always wonder this when there are mass hatchings of any animal that lays masses of eggs. What will they DO with them all? In nature, there’s a very high mortality rate due to predation (which is why the species evolved to have large number of offspring), but not in a zoo. What on earth will they do with 140 adult tarantulas? They could send 2 to every zoo in the world that keeps or wants them and probably have some left over.

Geez, maybe use a fold or something and place images below? Spiders are a very common phobia for a lot of people.

Perhaps those of you with such phobias can just put the RSS feed on your browser? You could see the title of the new animal and skip it if you think it would be a problem.

If you’re sufficiently afraid of spiders that photos freak you out, you may just fit the clinical definition of a phobia (rather than the colloquial ‘I don’t like them’ sense of the word). They have treatments for that now that don’t even involve real spiders (multiple spider studies have shown that virtual reality therapy for phobias is every bit as effective as traditional exposure therapy). You don’t have to live in fear!

Thank you, Zooborns, for featuring non-mammals! While the fennec foxes are truly adorable, it’s nice to branch out. Can we have more reptile photos? I know we had turtles not too long ago…

Not so cute if you live right next to the zoo… Not going home tonight…

I was wondering this too. Maybe they sell them to the pet trade? I hope that’s the case… more domestic-bred animals = less wild-caught animals = good for everyone! Plus cashflow for the zoo, I’d imagine, even if it’s minimal.

Some of you are overreacting. I hate snakes and even seeing them on TV or in photos is unpleasant. But I don’t fall into hysterics nor expect the world to cater to me.
