Does this puggle look familiar? Many ZooBorns readers first learned about puggles after being introduced to this little girl on October 23. We're happy to report that Beau, Taronga Zoo's Short-beaked Echidna baby, also known as a puggle, is doing very well under the watchful eyes of the nurses in their wildlife hospital.

In the wild, female Echidnas return to their burrow every few days to feed their offspring, so Beau gets fed milk every three days, which has helped her triple in size. Her caregivers have begun exposing the youngster to dirt, so that Beau can learn to dig and burrow! She is developing a prickly coating of spikes, which rise a few millimetres above her skin, as pictured in its most recent image below.

Puggles look like they OUGHT to come out of eggs. Still has a belly button, I see, so I guess chickens do too.

I’m curious. Why did you give this little girl a masculine name? Beau is French for handsome (i.e. male attractiveness). It can be used as a man’s first name or mean a boyfriend (in the romantic sense).

Thanks for the update! The day after the first post, I was the only one in my office that knew what a puggle was! Thanks for that, ZooBorns.
    Continued good luck to Beau.

As it turns out, the sex is currently unknown. He/she/or it was listed as a “her” in one of the communications we received and we defaulted a bit prematurely. The sex will not be known for a couple of months. Regardless, for better and worse, the critter’s name is Beau. Long live Beau!

Actually, puggles DO come from eggs. Echidnas belong to the family Tachyglossidae in the monotreme order of egg-laying mammals.

Hmm, has this post accidentally become “anchored” at the top of the blog? It reappeared yesterday as the first post and is still the first post today. I love puggles too, but seeing this might make someone think the blog has not been updated, and they would miss the newer posts below.

Actually – a woman can be handsome as well. It’s only the last 30-40 years or so that handsome was considered only for males. Look up handsome in the dictionary and you’ll see a female reference as well as male.
