The nursery in Cincinnati Zoo's Children's Zoo has a brand new addition! Santos, the baby Ocelot, was born November 2 at the Abilene Zoo in Texas. He'll become a part of the Cincinnati Zoo's Cheetah Encounter Show in the summer of 2014.

Ocelots are native to much of South America and Mexico. They are expert hunters, and are fiercely territorial. They are listed as a species of Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Where is Santos’ mother? Why isn’t he with HER???

I second David’s question. If his mom didn’t take care of him or didn’t have enough milk, then there’s a reason to hand-rear him. But to take him away from his mom and have him raised by people just so he can be part of a show at the zoo doesn’t strike me as a good reason. I was also troubled by the noise from kids in the video. The hand-rearing building at the National Zoo is off-limits to people who don’t work there and is never open to the public.

I agree with you completely. This looks very wrong indeed.

I was just going to ask this same question. I know of Zoo’s who do this and its awful. If you put an Animal through pregnancy, it should be allowed to attempt raising her babie. Its not right but there are alot of not right things that go on in Zoo’s unfortunately. I’m not a Zoo hater, I’m a Member at my local Zoo, I just pay close attention to alot of doings there and at other Zoo’s. I feel for the Mother, wandering where her babie is. Awful. Cinncy Zoo won’t see your comments here, please tweet or facebook them as well to be heard.

His mother was allowed to try to raise him. She was not able to nurse him and so keepers had to step in.
