On April 24, France’s ZooParc de Beauval welcomed a male Manatee who weighed 55 pounds at birth!  The not-so-little baby will spend the next two years living with his mother, Femore, in the zoo’s tropical exhibit.

Manatees are the world’s only herbivorous aquatic mammals.  At the zoo, the Manatees collectively eat more than 500 pounds of vegetables each day.  Their favorites?  Lettuce and potatoes.  In the wild, Manatees feed on underwater grasses.  They live only in warm coastal waters and inland marshes.

All three species of Manatees (South American, West Indian, and West Africa) are listed as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.  People are the main threat to Manatees, through collisions with boat propellers, toxic algae blooms, pollution, and entanglement in fishing gear.

The birth of this Manatee calf is important to the European Breeding Program.

How do they have manatees when they are not supposed to be transported long distances due to their organs? If not supported by water they collapse. Longest length allowed transported to a zoo from Florida is Ohio. Manatees are basically what you could call my livelihood. This is something I need to know.

Can they not be transported IN water? Like, a tank in a plane?

Manatees can be transported for long distances in ship, plane or trucks, and they don’t need to be in the water for that (like a tank). They don’t ¨collapse”, but it is necessary to put them on a soft surface to make the trip more confortable. Manatees have been transported VERY long distances (Mexico to Jâpan, for example), with no problem.

They can, but it is not necessary. Transporting a big tank with water with a manatee in it would make the logistic too complicated. It is better to keep the animal on a soft surface, moist, monitored, comfortable and still. Manatees are very resistant animals.
