1_Snow leopard triplets on exhibit

The three Snow Leopard cubs, born March 5 at the Akron Zoo, made their first public appearance on June 3, 2016.

The cubs were also recently allowed to pick their own names! The two males are now named: Layan, (short for Himalayan Mountains), and Altai (named after the Altai Mountains). Snow Leopards are indigenous to both mountain ranges. The female cub is named Asha, which means “Hope” in Sanskrit.

The zoo had narrowed down the names to six possible choices and wrote each name on an enrichment item container. The six containers were placed in the Snow Leopard exhibit. The cubs were then released into the exhibit area and allowed to approach the toys. The cubs went to the enrichment items with ‘Layan’, ‘Altai’ and ‘Asha’ first, thus picking their own names. The people who submitted the winning names will be getting free admission to the zoo and a Snow Leopard prize pack.

The cubs are 13 weeks old and weigh about 10-11 pounds. They will be on exhibit daily with their mother, Shanti, from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. As the cubs grow and become more comfortable with their surroundings they will be on exhibit for longer periods of time. When the cubs are not on exhibit, their father, Roscoe, will be outside in the exhibit.

This is the third litter for mom Shanti, but her first set of triplets. The triplets are also a first for Akron Zoo.

The Snow Leopard (Panthera uncia) is classified as “Endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the world’s oldest and largest global environmental organization.

A leading Snow Leopard conservation organization, the Snow Leopard Trust, estimates population numbers of this elusive cat to be between 4,000 and 6,500 remaining in the wild. They inhabit high, rugged mountainous regions of central Asia, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, China, Mongolia, and Russia. Their numbers are declining due to human influence, such as poaching for medicinal markets and hides, depletion of their prey base, retribution killing following livestock losses, residential and commercial development, and civil unrest.

Snow Leopards' long, thick fur not only keeps them warm in the cold climates of the mountainous regions they inhabit, but also helps camouflage them in their environment, allowing them to sneak up on their prey. A 40-inch-long tail aids Snow Leopards in balancing while navigating rocky terrain, and they wrap it around them to keep warm at night. Their large paws are covered with a cushion of hair that increases surface area and acts like insulating snow shoes.

Snow Leopards make sounds like other big cats, but they cannot roar. Instead, they make a sound called a “chuff.” They are solitary animals, although a male and female Snow Leopard may be seen during mating season or a female with her young cubs before they venture out on their own at about 2 years of age.

The species has a gestation period of 90 to 100 days. Offspring are fully weaned at about ten weeks of age but will remain with their mother until they become independent at around 18-22 months.

    my story so far:
    ~ Chapter 1 ~
This is a story about a 11 year old girl, called Ashley. She lives with her Mum and her own pet cat, Hunter. She got Hunter for her 8th birthday and she loved him. Hunter had a beautiful grey snow-leopard like fur pattern (as he is a silver bengal). She still had her dad then, but he unfortunately passed away the day before her 9th birthday, which is also Christmas. Ashley was born in Norway but when she was 10 she moved to live permanently in the Himalayan mountains. Now it’s just Ash, Mum and Hunter. Ash lived on the side of a mountain in a small wooden house. It usually snowed on the mountain and animals liked to come out like: Arctic wolves, Arctic foxes, Snow leopards Arctic hares, Arctic ground squirrels, Snowy owls, Puffins, Tundra swan, Snow geese, Steller’s eiders and Willow ptarmigan, and some of those you need to avoid being eaten by.
This story starts on a cold winter’s day of December 19th Himalayas 1867, Ash was taking a short walk along the frozen waterfalls edge when she heard a strange spraying sound. Maybe a tiny bit of ice broke off and the water was escaping, but no, it wasn’t that. She was going to investigate. But Hunter got their first. Ash went round the corner following Hunter and she couldn’t believe her eyes, standing there was the biggest, and the fluffiest snow leopard ever! But the snow leopard was, well…
“Ew Hunter, he’s peeing!” Said Ash, disgusted. But Hunter didn’t seem to care because he was pawing the urine. Ash was afraid of Snow Leopards and quickly grabbed Hunter and ran home.
Ash gave Hunter a bath; that took way too long and she helped herself to a hot chocolate and a cookie. Hunter climbed up onto Ash and purred.
“You’re lucky I love you!” Ash whispered to Hunter and they both fell asleep within seconds.
The next morning, Ash was baking. Baking was one of her favourite things to do when Mum went down to the village. Mum normally stayed in the village for a whole day, so that meant that she and Hunter had the house to themselves.
“So, what storm are we going to bake up today, Hunter?” said Ash with a smile.
Hunter meowed sweetly, jumping up to Dad’s old cookbook and as the book fell off the counter and the page fell open onto the strawberry fudge recipe.
“Wanna do the strawberry fudge do you, sweet little boy?” Ash liked calling Hunter names like that. Hunter always wraps his tail around her legs back in return.
Ash got the ingredients and Hunter pawed at the bowls and spoons they needed. They were baking for an hour and a half and then they put the finished strawberry fudge in the fridge to cool for 5 hours. After that Ash didn’t know that to do. She wanted to meet Mum in town, but Mum took the horse and carriage, so Ash let Hunter out to play when she put on her coat, hat, gloves and scarf and went for a walk. Ash decided to walk into the snowy trees on the other side of the mountain, where she hasn’t ventured before. Hunter (like always) followed Ash where she went. It was quite steep on the opposite side of the mountain, Ash slipped on some ice and stood back up and wiped off the snow. Ash could see three figures in the distance. And a hut. Two of the silhouettes were tall and one of them was holding something thin and long, nearly as tall as the shadow itself. The other was holding, what looked like a bow and arrow. And the third silhouette was the biggest, and it was in danger! She had to help! Ash ran as fast as she could down the steep hill, towards the hut where they were. The silhouettes came into focus and she could see the two tall shadows were men, and the men were hunting a Snow Leopard. Ash’s biggest fear was big cats. She hesitated for a moment but thought better of herself and ran straight down the hill and barged into the men and bit them. The men were startled as she bit and scratched and hit, they dropped their weapons and Hunter ran over to the Snow Leopard and licked its wounds clean. Ash bent down and grabbed the spear the first man dropped and bashed both of them hard on the head. They fell to the floor.
“Oh my gosh, Hunter! I knocked both of them out!” Ash was secretly proud of herself. Not knowing what else to do she took off her silky scarf and wrapped it round the Snow Leopards back paw that was injured the most. It needed it more than she did. The Snow Leopard Licked her hand as she wrapped the scarf around its paw she noticed that it had a small bottom – she learnt that from reading a book her Dad wrote, if a Snow Leopard has a big bottom it’s usually a male, so she guessed it was a female. She also couldn’t help notice that she had a big belly.
The next thing Ash thought was what could her name be? She called out names:
“Spots..?” the Snow Leopard took no notice “Major..?” still no reaction “What about Snowflake?” the Snow Leopard looked at Ash with her big blue eyes and blinked. “I think she likes Snowflake, and I will call her Snowy for short.” Snowy purred.
Ash released from now on that Snow Leopards are beautiful and don’t want to hurt you unless you hurt them, and that they are in danger, not just from these hunters but are becoming extinct. And Ash was no longer afraid of Snow Leopards.
The Snow Leopard trotted away into the Fir forest to rest its hurt paw. Ash and Hunter walked back over the top of the mountain and back home, safely. By the time they were home Mum was also. She asked how their day was and Ash told Mum that they went for a walk. She was careful not to mention anything about the other side of the mountain and of course the incident that happened there, but luckily Mum didn’t ask anything about where they went. Ash, Hunter and Mum sat on the sofa and watched a bit of TV then fell asleep.
It was now December 21st, 4 days away from Ash`s Birthday and Christmas. Ash never gets excited for her birthday, as her dad died the day before on Christmas eve. Mum had to go to the village again. Ash suspected that she was doing Birthday shopping for her. So Ash decided to go back to the other side of the mountain where she saw Snowflake yesterday. The hut where the men lived was empty, as there were no lights on at all. Ash nearly stumbled over again on an icy patch. She reached the forest and saw Hunter heading in. Ash started at a run to meet Hunter.
“Heya boy, what ya doing here?” Asked Ash. Hunter looked up at Ash with his eyes. Ash smiled.
They both did a small jump when they heard a loud, but soft grunt. They looked ahead and saw Snowflake.
“Snowy!” said Ash and Hunter ran up to her and curled up next to her. Snowy blinked slowly. Ash remembered a section in her Dads book that all cats blink slowly in a happy and affectionate way. Ash blinked back. Ash was about to take a big risk. She was going to sit close to her. Ash already trusted Snowy. She slowly crouched down onto the bark and moss covered floor and put her head on Snowys soft fur. To Ash’s surprise Snowy just kept on purring. Their trust of each other was forming very quickly.
After what seemed like an hour, the stars came out on the vivid sky line and the sky turned a beautiful mix of purple and blue. Up on the mountains it got dark very quickly. Ash checked her watch. 9:24. She should be getting back.
Ash’s heavy feet took small sleepy steps and her heart pounded against her chest. She took a great big yawn as she opened the wooden door. She had a busy day keeping that Snow Leopard moving its paw. She had a scratch across her left leg from where Snowy and Hunter had unexpectedly pounced at her. Snowy accidentally kept her claws out when Hunter, as always, kept his claws in when playing with Ash. she didn’t care. They had a special bond together and she was happy. The door opened with an ear piercing creek and Ash took a bigger step in. It felt different. Her steps echoed in the eerie silence. She called for Mum. No answer. She must not be back yet, but Ash didn’t like it. She wanted Dad.
    ~ Chapter 2 ~
The next morning, Mum was still not home. Ash decided to bake some brownies. She grabbed Dad’s cook book and opened to page 746. She started to stir the brownie mix she had made when Hunter woke with a sudden jolt.
“Morning Mr” Ash said. Hunter yawned and stretched his back legs and sleepy opened his bright blue eyes. Ash laughed. She opened the oven and a big cloud of smoke erupted from out of it. As she waved the big puff of smoke away and bent down to place the brownies in the oven, she heard a small thud followed by a large bang. Ash thought it was probably the snow falling off the roof of the cabin. She’d better clear the snow from the front of the hut. But then Ash had a sudden wave of possibility. It could be Mum. she rushed to the front door and opened it. A cold bitter draft of snow came and bit at Ash’s toes. No Mum. And no snow. But what was it? She wasn’t bothered. The timer went for 25 minutes and Ash opened the oven door, another puff of smoke emerged from it. Ash choked and spluttered.
“What is it with this smoke?” Ash thought aloud. Hunter stared blankly at Ash as if she was being silly. “Probably somethings wrong with the fan.” she wondered.
After the brownies cooled Ash brought some in her backpack and took them to Snowflake. Ash knew Snowflake couldn’t eat it; she just wanted to bring them for her to see. When She and Hunter arrived into the wood, Snowy was not in her usual place. Hunter got his claws out and gripped onto the bark of a tree. He reached the topmost branch and leapt up into the leaves of the Fir tree. Then he poked his head out from the leaves and looked around the forest. Ash was certain he was searching for Snowy. So Ash tightened the straps on her backpack, did up her loose shoelace in a double knot, tightened her messy hair and took a deep breath. She was scared of most things. Heights was one of them. But she was going to do it. She chose a thick tree next to Hunter’s. She lunged three steps back and took a run and jump. Her arms and legs wrapped tightly around the thick trunk of the tree and she had a little celebration to herself by punching her fist in the air but stopped quickly because she wobbled a little. Her palms were sweaty but that didn’t stop her. Her nails dug in the bark, just like Hunters did. Her foot slipped and she repositioned it. She swung up into the leaves of the tree and poked her head out of the dark green leaves. She had done it. She squinted into the distance and Hunter did a loud meow. Ash looked to where Hunter was looking and saw a grey, white and black figure moving towards the middle of the wood. She was chasing something but at lightning speed. Hunter got into pouncing mode and leaped onto another tree. Ash knew it was the quickest way and took another deep breath. If Hunter could do it she could. She jumped and hoped for the best. She did it! Now she just had to do this until she got to Snowlfake. Just before she jumped again she pulled the hair tie out of her hair and put it on her wrist. Her pony tail came undone and Ash let it free. Every time she jumped she felt the wind in her hair. It was warmer on top of the trees because heat rises. She learnt that from Dad’s book. Dad was a cook and an author. And an animal lover. They finally reached Snowy, and Ash watched Hunter jump onto a small tree then off the tree into the water. Hunter was unlike most cats; he didn’t mind water. So Ash did the same. She jumped down onto a short tree and then into the water. She stepped out and shivered. Snowy didn’t know they were right behind her. Hunter was about to run up to Snowflake when Ash stopped him.
“No, Hunter!” she whispered “she’s hunting food. Leave her and watch.” so they watched. Snowflake crouched down into the knee length snow and wagged her tail. She pounced. And in her mouth was a Pikas. That’s when Snowy saw them crouched behind a tree. Her eyes widened and she ran up to them and licked until they were both covered in slobber.
“Clever girl!” Ash exclaimed “Is that your lunch? Mine is chocolate brownies I made. Want to see?” Snowy blinked. She pulled her brownies out of her backpack then out of the tub they were in. Snowy sniffed them and bit her hand gently. She rubbed behind her ears and she purred. She didn’t mean it in a horrible way, Ash thought, she probably meant it in a good way. Then Snowy licked her lips.
“No. I’m sorry you’re not allowed my brownies. It’s bad for you.” So Ash ate her brownies, Hunter ate his cat food, Ash brought with her, and hunter ate his Pikas and catched a blue sheep. (blue sheep aren’t actually blue. Another name for them is Bharal). Snowflake ate everything except from the bones and horns. Ash left the bones but took the horns. Ash thought that she might need them for something in the future. Just in case.
Around 6:00pm Ash thought she should head back home for dinner. When she got back home with Hunter, Mum still wasn’t home. She made herself some soup and fell fast asleep on the sofa.
On the morning of December 23rd, Mum was still not home. Ash was really starting to get worried. She decided she would get ready to go and look for her. She went over to the coat rack and took a big wooly coat and slid her snow boots on as well as her gloves, scarf and hat. She pulled the house keys out from under the inside doormat and unlocked the back door. She needed to pack. She would go tomorrow. It could be a few long days of hard looking. Ash thought she would need help. Help of Hunter and Snowflake. After locking the door, Ash whistled for Hunter and he came trotting over to her then she ran over to the forest and made a loud pitch call. Ash had heard Snowy call Ash before. That was their way of calling each other. And Snowflake came running towards her at top speed.
“Alright” Ash whispered calmly “we’re all leaving home tomorrow to go on a mission to find Mum… well my Mum. I suggest we go to the village where Mum was. Hopefully she’s still there.” Ash got more serious as she went on “I think there’s something wrong. She has never been out this long without me. She’ s usually concerned about leaving me for too long without an adult. And I miss her. She misses me too. I know it. Time is running out. I should have gone yesterday. But we’ve still got time. I say we pack and wrap up warm because these could be a few routh, long days. We will all have a good night’s sleep and then go. I have made you both backpacks.” And she pulled out two backpacks, one smaller than the other. One was purple and the other was teal. She gave Hunter the small purple one and Snowy the larger teal one. Ash helped attach the backpacks to them and tighten them. Hunter’s sat comfortably on his back and Snowflake’s attached to the backer part of his back. Ash had also made Snowy a saddle out of one of her old jumpers and Mum’s old leather jacket. She would sit on the leather that acted almost like a saddle and the jumper would act as a saddle pad. She would hold on by squeezing her legs into Snowy’s soft, silky fur. This wouldn’t hurt her. Ash got back to talking. “So, with these handy backpacks we can carry more than what I can just on my own. I will of course bring my own backpack.” Then she turned to Hunter. “Hunter, your job is to carry the food, water and money. And Snowflake, it is your job to carry clothing and anything else you want.” Ash puffed her chest out and said,
“And I will take my own blue backpack. I will take a first aid kit and books. You can never leave anywhere without books.” Snowflake and Hunter were play fighting together. Ash smiled. “You cuties! You better have been listening, like I said we’ve got a long journey ahead of us. Hunter, let’s go home and rest. Snowflake you should do the same.” Snowflake trotted into the woods swaying her tail gently as she went as Ash and Hunter walked home. Ash sighed, “Oh, I really am very worried about Mum. I hope she’s there to greet me in the morning and surprise me for my birthday.” And she fell asleep with a mix of excitement to see Mum in the morning and worry of her still missing.
Today was the funeral of Dad’s birthday, Christmas and the day they went looking for Mum. Ash sat up and rubbed her eyes awake. Still no Mum. She sat there for a minute reminding herself of the plan. She grabbed her rucksack and whistled to call Hunter. He came charging thinking it was food time.
“Yes, yes. I’ll give you food but first go grab a toy.” Hunter did nothing. Ash knew what would make him get his favorite toy. “Play time Hunter..!” and said that Hunter sped off to his shoebox where he kept all of his toys and came back with a mouse on a string toy and his fish toy he had had since he was a kitten. She put a tablespoon of cat biscuits in his bowl and placed it down with a bowl of warm milk. Ash got Hunter’s purple backpack and packed his toy he picked, and his wet food and treats. She put her leftover brownies and made some sandwiches for herself. Snowy could hunt her own food on the way. She grabbed her piggy bank from her room and smashed it. She grabbed all her money: two £100 notes and another £50 note. £250 that should be good. The last thing for Hunter’s backpack was water. She grabbed her water bottle and milk with a tin for them to go in. Now it was time for her bag. She brought her Dads cookbook for good luck and some others. The only thing left for her own bag was the first aid kit. She went up to Mum’s bedroom and opened her cupboard. She scanned every self and draw. There it was. Mum’s first aid kit. She grabbed it and put it in her bag with all her books. Then she went to her room and grabbed: lots of layers of tops and several layers of thick joggers, an over jacket and four cozy jumpers. Then she grabbed two handfuls of socks and she was ready.
When they got outside, Ash called for Snowy and she came almost at once. She put the clothes in Snowflakes backpack and saddled her up. She put Hunter’s backpack on him and then put her own on. It was time. The time they had been waiting for. They were going to find Mum. Ash inhaled more air than was necessary as she climbed on Snowflake.
“Good girl! Now Hunter, i’m not sure if you’ll use it, but I have just attached a special pocket to my backpack that you can sit in.” Hunter stared at her then she patted Snowy’s silky fur and he jumped up as he meowed with a pause in the middle and it sounded a bit like this: “me ow” then he climbed in comfortably and started to fall asleep.
“Glad he likes it” she whispered to Snowy. She wanted to make up a group for Snow Leopards because they don’t have one. Ash read in one of her Dad’s books that a group of Tigers is known as an ambush, a group of regular Leopards is called a leap and Lions form prides, but there is no term for a group of Snow Leopards because they usually travel alone. Ash decided to make her own name up for it. Since Snow Leopards are also known as the ghost of the mountains, and regular Leopards group is called a Leap so she decided on ghostLeapers she wasn’t sure if she liked it but when she said it aloud to Hunter and Snowflake, they seemed to like it.
It became twilight as the sun set on the horizon and they were going to settle down for the night, when Snowflake collapsed just as Ash got off.
“What’s wrong?” asked Ash concerned. Snowy’s eyes closed slowly like she was falling asleep. She turned on her side and she started to pant.
“Hunter, I have a feeling she’s… pregnant.” Snowflake clenched her eyes shut and she started to push.
“Yes, I have a strong feeling she’s pregnant.” Then a small ball of slimy fluff came out and sniffed the cold air. She had a mark on her forehead that looked like a diamond and had marks around her eyes like she was wearing eyeliner. Ash wanted to call her Diamond and Di for short. Snowy groomed the diamond on her head before pausing again.
Then a second one came out and this time it was a boy. He was mostly white and had very pale shades of grey and black. He had dazzling blue eyes like electric and was quick on his paws. Frost. Frost was the perfect name for him.
“I think another one is coming.” she smiled. And out came another ball of fluff. She thought of the name Hope. she thought it would bring good luck and hope to the young Snow Leopard cubs life. Snowflake looked in a lot of pain, but Ash knew she shouldn’t interfere. Yet another came, and the first thing she did was sniff the air and struggle to stand up and toppled over.
“Hey, be careful you brave little fella!” Laughed Ash, “I know, Your name can be Brave! Is that all of them Snowy? No more? Ok. Wow, I didn’t know you were a mother! I thought you were a little on the fat side!” Snowflake stared at Ash to say “of course I’m a mother!” Ash and her GhostLeapers now included: Ash, Hunter, Snowflake, Diamond, Frost, Hope and Brave. The day her Dad died may not be all sad. It was christmas. A time to be happy.
