On the afternoon of September 5, visitors of BIOPARC Valencia were fortunate enough to witness the birth of a Zebra foal.

Amazingly, just a few minutes after the birth, that moment of joy was replaced by one of anguish when the newborn colt accidentally fell into the small body of water in the Zebra exhibit. Keepers quickly entered the water and saved the baby. The newborn was delivered to the anxious mother, while the crowd of zoo patrons responded with applause.

The new foal and mom, La Niña, are doing well. Keepers report that the little Zebra instinctively follows his protective mother.

La Niña arrived at BIOPARC Valencia in 2007 from the Halle Zoo (Germany) and the new colt’s father, Zambé, was transferred from Safari de Peaugres (France) in 2012.

That rescue video was intense – even knowing there was a positive outcome, I held my breath. Good job, humans!

Most don’t realize that zoos are big business! The space they allow animals is never big enough – elephants have 1,000 times smaller spaces/polar bears 1,000,000 times smaller than their territories. Because of this, they develop abnormal repetitive behavior, act out, hurt themselves…To zoos, animals are just a money making commodities and killing or selling surplus animals is a profitable way for zoos to dispose of them, with many ending up at hunting ranches, pet shops, taxidermists, circuses, exotic meat industries, and even research facilities. Despite what zoos say animals are still taken from the wild. They spend millions on keeping captive animals confined as opposed to fighting to protect natural habits that are being destroyed at an alarming rate and threatening many endangered species! Zoos in the U.S. make around 16 million dollars a year and give -0- towards conserving the natural habitat of the animals they use to make $$$. Zoos are not educational and do not give children an idea of what an animal is like in its natural habitat… Show zoos that you don’t believe in their cruel practices by boycotting them!!
