The Newest, Cutest Baby Animals from the World's Zoos & Aquariums

  • The birth of a rare Eastern Black Rhino at Yorkshire Wildlife Park has become the catalyst for a fund-raising campaign to help save the endangered species.

The arrival of baby Rocco in January , who can be seen at the award-winning park’s rhino reserve, was a significant moment in the European breeding programme for the species whose numbers have dropped to below 1,000 in the wild.

His birth has sparked awareness in their plight and the park’s Wildlife Foundation is organising the appeal in his honour to provide vital funding to support a young rhino calf called Bella and help other rhinos at the Ol Jogi Conservancy in Kenya.

The rhino calf who was later named Bella had been attacked by a predator and sustained infected wounds whilst being severely dehydrated and unable to walk. She was rescued and since then she has been hand raised by staff at the Conservancy.

  • The amazing moment a rare baby southern white rhino was born at West Midland Safari Park, has been caught on CCTV.

Keepers watching the live footage behind-the-scenes, saw the female calf arrive at 1:48am on 11 January 2024, following a tricky breach birth, for 15-year-old mum, Keyah.

After a few attempts, keepers noticed that the calf was struggling to get to her feet, so stepped in quickly to get her standing, enabling her to tentatively walk to her mum to have her first feed.

Now at a week old, the calf is doing really well and has been given the African name Malaika, meaning ‘angel’.

TORONTO, ON, Friday December 29, 2023: Sometimes the best gifts come following the holiday season!  In the case of Toronto Zoo, they were delivered an extra special one: a white rhino calf!

At 7:58 am yesterday morning, Thursday, December 28th, Toronto Zoo was thrilled to welcome white rhino Sabi’s first calf to their Zoo family! While every rhino pregnancy is exciting, Sabi’s was especially so. Following her arrival in Toronto in 2012, hormone monitoring performed by Reproductive Science team identified that Sabi exhibited "long" estrus cycles (~70 days in length, compared to the typical ~30 days of fertile females), which have made conception a significant challenge for her. Following continual adjustments in daily care and diet, Sabi’s behaviour in spring 2022 suggested that her hormonal cycles had switched from the long cycles to the typical cycle length. The likelihood of successfully conceiving for the first time drops with age in many species, including white rhinos, and Zoo staff were keenly aware of this with Sabi. Your Toronto Zoo Wildlife Care and Reproductive Science teams were thrilled that the breeding introductions with white rhino male Tom in summer 2022 were successful. This is the second calf sired by the 15-year-old rhino. His first calf, Theo, was born December 24, 2017, and left Toronto in late 2021.

Conservationists at Chester Zoo have shared their “joy” following the birth of one of the world’s rarest mammals, a critically endangered eastern black rhino.

The female calf was safely delivered onto a bed of soft sand by new mum Zuri on Sunday 12 November at 2:45pm, following a 15-month pregnancy.

Rhino experts say it’s “quite unusual” for a calf to be born in daylight, which gave keepers the unique opportunity to capture the special moment on camera.

Bottle-fed greater one-horned rhino calf thriving at conservation center

CUMBERLAND, Ohio — Births at The Wilds are always cause for celebration, but this fall the reward is triple-fold as a southern white rhino, a greater one-horned rhino – who required hand-rearing to thrive – and a Persian onager are garnering the attention of visitors and staff at the 10,000-acre conservation center.

The yet-to-be-named female greater one-horned rhino was born on September 22, 2023—just in time for World Rhino Day. She took immediately to the bottle and already weighs more than 150 pounds. The hand-rearing of a rhino calf is a first for The Wilds’ Animal Management team, who acted quickly when they noticed Anna, a first-time mother born at the Bronx Zoo in 2013, was unable to care for her newborn and both required medical interventions. Anna came to The Wilds in 2021.

It's been a remarkable time at Cotswold Wildlife Park and a milestone for both the European Breeding Programme and for Rhino conservation. Two weeks ago, White Rhino Ruby gave birth to the tenth Rhino born at the Park in the last decade – a huge achievement. It's rare to catch Rhino births on camera as females usually give birth during the night but luckily keepers were at the Park when the calf was born. They managed to film some incredible footage of the birth (at around 5pm on Saturday 12 August 2023) and the first moments in the new arrival's life.
