Taronga Western Plains Zoo is excited to announce that guests are now able to see lioness Marion’s cubs!
11-weeks-old as of December 19th, 2023, cubs Bahati, Jabari and Zawadi have met their father Lwazi and big sisters Amali, Imani and Mara, and have been given the chance to explore the exhibit after hours.
Lion keepers at Taronga Western Plains Zoo received the best gift for International Zookeeper Day, with a trio of lion cubs born late in the evening on Wednesday 4 October 2023.
This is the second litter for breeding pair Marion and Lwazi, after three bouncing baby girls were born on 7 April 2022.
“The cubs are doing really well, they’re hitting all their milestones and Marion is an absolute superstar mum,” said Senior Keeper Melanie Friedman.
Six fluffy bundles of joy have arrived at Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo, with the Zoo’s Meerkat mob welcoming its second litter of pups for 2023.
Mum Midra gave birth to six pups on Wednesday 2nd August, and while the pups are yet to be sexed or named, keeper Rez Onay said they’re doing well.
“Coming in each morning and seeing the pups, it’s the best part of the day,” Rez said.
Taronga Western Plains Zoo is celebrating the arrival of a White Rhino calf, born on Friday 16 June 2023.
The male calf was born overnight to mother Mopani, with Keepers delighted to discover him at the beginning of their work day.
Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo is celebrating the birth of a male critically endangered Black Rhino calf born on 14th April to mother Kufara using a world-first reproductive treatment for the species.
Three boisterous baby Spider Monkeys have been thrilling visitors to Taronga Western Plains Zoo these school holidays.
Born over the space of a few months to mums Rosa, Hiccups and Jai, the three young females are thriving as they learn to eat, play and climb on the Primate Islands.

There was plenty of rubber necking at Taronga Western Plains Zoo on Saturday 21 January when the Giraffe herd welcomed a new arrival.
The healthy male calf, named Shomari, arrived late in the afternoon, much to the delight of watching keepers, guests and volunteers.

Taronga Western Plains Zoo has been delivered a tall order with two giraffe calves born into the breeding herd just one day apart early last week. The two new additions join 16- and 11week-old giraffe calves, Matata and Wayo, bringing the breeding herd size up to an incredible 13 individuals.
Taronga Western Plains Zoo’s three female lion cubs have officially been dubbed with the purrfect names to take their pride of place in Dubbo. Amali, Mara and Imani are the new cubs on the block pawing their way into the hearts of guests visiting the Lion Pride Lands.
Lion Supervisor Justine Powell said the four-month-old cub trio were a delight to watch blossom, with their confidence and personalities becoming stronger with every passing day.
We are ecstatic to announce seventeen endangered joeys have been born in Taronga Western Plains Zoo’s new Chuditch conservation breeding program in their new Taronga Sanctuary in Dubbo.
A mere three months after beginning this breeding program, keepers have checked pouches and found two females with six joeys and one with five!
