This Father’s Day Cotswold Wildlife Park is delighted to announce the birth of Critically Endangered Cotton-top Tamarins twins and celebrate one of the most devoted dads in the animal kingdom.

Human dads receive plenty of recognition on Father’s Day, celebrated this year on Sunday June 18, but the animal kingdom also has its share of committed fathers. While many males play a role in the rearing of their young, Cotton-top Tamarin fathers go above and beyond when it comes to raising their offspring.

Marwell Zoo has welcomed incredibly rare cotton-headed tamarin triplets!

The Critically Endangered infants were born to first time parents, Gurt and Mico on 6 May and keepers say they are doing well.

Both mother, Gurt, and father, Mico, can be seen taking turns carrying the youngsters, who cling to the fur on their parent’s back and stomach areas.

The arrivals are incredibly rare because there are three of them as well as their conservation status.

It is normal for cotton-headed tamarins to give birth to twins every year in the wild but triplets are incredibly uncommon.

Tamarins are squirrel-size monkeys with a golden ruff resembling a lion's mane. At birth, the golden lion tamarin is fully furred with eyes open. It clings to its mother for the first few weeks and nurses for 90 days. At about five weeks, it begins to experience things independently. Zoo staff have not determined the baby’s sex yet. Zoo visitors can spot mom and baby in the Faces of the Rain Forest exhibit.

In honor of International Primate Day, Denver Zoo has a special announcement about their baby golden lion tamarin. After watching this little one grow for the last few months, keepers have decided to name them Chickpea! Based on their appearance and tiny body size, Chickpea is the perfect name for their little chickpea. Keepers haven't needed to separate the baby from their parents, so they don't know their sex yet. The animal care team reports that this cutie is growing well, eating solid foods, and is spending more time away from mom and dad exploring their habitat in Emerald Forest. Golden lion tamarins are listed as Endangered by the IUCN, so this birth is a wonderful conservation win for the species! Watch Chickpea and dad Chino try to enjoy some fruit (before Chickpea accidentally drops it!).

RACINE, WI July 5, 2022 – On June 21, 2022, the Racine Zoo welcomed another pair of tamarin twins — nearly 6 months after their older siblings, Gabriella and Gianna, were born on December 22. While this is a new record for the shortest interbirth interval at the Racine Zoo, it is not uncommon for emperor tamarins, and the pregnancy and birth all ran smoothly and without issue for mother, Amelie, who was also born at the Racine Zoo in 2017. The newborn twins mark the seventh and eighth offspring of Amelie and her mate Pitino in less than four years! They also make a total of 16 emperor tamarins born at the Racine Zoo in total.
