Given the currently quite mild temperatures, Wuppertal Zoo’s Elephant calf (born October 14th) can get a shower outside! Together with her mother "Tika", the little one clearly enjoys being sprayed with the water hose.

The African elephants in the Wuppertal Zoo are regularly showered and washed for skin care. This also allows the animal care team to make an accurate inspection of the skin condition of the animals and strengthens trust between elephants and animal caretakers.

Monarto Safari Park’s Spotted Hyena cub has had its first health check, with veterinary staff and keepers delighted the little one is in ‘tip-spot’ shape.

The two-month-old cub was carefully removed from its den to be weighed, examined, vaccinated and microchipped at the end of October. A small skin DNA sample was also taken and sent to Serengeti Hyena Research Group in Berlin to determine the cub’s sex.

Dallas Zoo is thrilled to announce that it got quite a treat the day before Halloween… with the arrival of a much-anticipated baby hippopotamus to your Dallas Zoo family!

Boipelo gave birth to a healthy hippo calf on Sunday, Oct. 30 around 5:30 p.m. Both mom and baby are doing well and have been bonding behind the scenes, while dad Gus and half-sister Adanna spend time on habitat.

The animal team had been closely monitoring Boipelo for several weeks as her birth window neared. Signs of labor started mid-afternoon that Sunday, and the team used cameras in the barn to keep tabs on Boipelo’s progress while allowing her to deliver the calf privately. Her labor progressed quickly and smoothly, as the team cheered Boipelo on from a distance.

The calf emerged strong and immediately came up for a breath of air, and then was swimming and active while mom watched on attentively. The little one was observed nursing within an hour of birth, and mom and baby spent the rest of that first night lying close together in their pool behind the scenes.

They’re still several weeks away from the little one debuting on habitat, so in the meantime, keep an eye out on social for all the updates on mom and baby and the rest of Dallas’s hippo bloat!

  • Two years ago, one of the most important milestones in the history of Bioparc Fuengirola and for the ex situ conservation of one of the most endangered primates on the planet took place: the birth of Ekan, the first western lowland gorilla born in Andalusia.

Now visitors can see how much this little one has grown and how his relationship with the rest of the members of the group of this species housed at Bioparc Fuengirola has evolved.

Baby alert! Los Angeles Zoo’s mandrill Juliette recently gave birth! The female infant is nursing well and bonding with her mother. “Every time I get to sit with Juliette and her new infant, I feel honored. Being able to watch the relationship between them develop is so special,” says Animal Keeper L’Oréal Dunn. “This is Juliette’s fourth offspring, and she is a great mom. She does a fantastic job demonstrating maternal care like cuddling, grooming, nursing, and removing the umbilicus off of the infant.” If you look closely, you can still see the umbilical cord in one of the video clips taken soon after birth.
