The Newest, Cutest Baby Animals from the World's Zoos & Aquariums

Posted in , ,

Last month we brought you the Pittsburgh Zoo’s new litter of orphan Painted Hunting Dog pups which were being nursed by a surrogate domestic dog. Today we check back in on the feisty and playful (and a little wild) puppies, now about six weeks old. Note that the video sound goes in and out.

Boy, some of their marks really do look artificial. They’re cute, but I wouldn’t want them as pets if they’re that bitey.

I’m pretty sure those white marks are actually artificial. Probably so they can tell the pups apart.

Ah – If I were to describe them, I don’t think I’d say fiesty and playful, I’d say typical fat little puppies. Obviously, the surrogate mum did a good job there.
Also, “I gots your trouser, you no go anywhere. Also, this our shoe.”

    Thanks for sharing our video!
Yes, the white marks are artificial to keep track of who is who.

It is nice to know that the puppies are striving. The surrogate mom did a good job! LOL @ the markings.

There were 9 originally, but I only see 5 or 6 here, did a few of them die?

I also never count more than 5. The original article said the survival rate (even with an attentive mother) was 50 percent, so maybe the others did die.
I’m glad someone figured out about the dots, ’cause I was going to ask “Even though they are Painted Dogs, some of that is REAL paint, right?” Yes, surely to keep them straight, when doing exams or giving medical treatment.

Do tell us about the surrogate Momma. I hope she’s found a good home! Or maybe you’ll KEEP her, maybe as a zoo pet? Yes?

Such precious little domino doggies! Those markings are a clever way to tell them apart. And I love their round round round little puppy bellies.
