The Newest, Cutest Baby Animals from the World's Zoos & Aquariums

Posted in ,

Meet Siku, the only Polar Bear cub in an American zoo. "Siku" means “ice” in the Inupiat language, and it was chosen for
him by a fourth grader from the North Slope
Borough of Alaska. The Toledo Zoo, in conjunction with the World
Wildlife Fund, Polar Bears International and the North Slope Borough
Department of Wildlife Management, sponsored a naming contest for children in
that area in which they suggested names for the cub. The Zoo’s large mammal keepers chose Siku, and it’s a fitting name for an animal
whose wild counterparts depend on ice shelves for hunting.

Love the first pic … I hear the photographer saying, “Now give us a casual pose!” 😎

Some years ago, we lost our big beloved Polar Bear….but VERY shortly thereafter we were able to obtain two rescued polar cubs! What a happy day when they arrived at our wonderful zoo – they were named “Nanuk” (“polar bear” in Inuit, as I recall) and “Norton” for Norton Sound, place of their birth. After a year, Norton moved to a zoo in Rhode Island (where I believe he now lives with Trixie) and Nanuk is a fine huge bear who lives with Aurora. These are SUCH wonderful pictures!!

After seeing the top photo, my friends and I rerouted the trip from Columbus, Ohio to home in Chicago suburbs to include the Toledo Zoo. Siku did not disappoint – he was very playful mid morning even with the sweltering heat. Of course he had a very cold pool to play in.

Wow! they are cute. and i agree with @dale. If we’ll not control the global warming, definitely we’ll lose polar bears.
